"Silences and Gaps" Course/“沉默和缺失”课程/「沈默和缺失」課程
The collection of archival records of Chinese students at Andover, from 1878 to the present, documents a rich and important history of education that shaped Chinese modernity, Sino-American relations, and the history of Asians in America. Phillips Academy’s first digital humanities class titled “Silences and Gaps: the Record of Chinese Students at Phillips Academy” (fall 2019 and fall 2020) explored why such a rich archival collection has largely been ignored. The “silences and gaps” of the record examine the process of how archival records were created, catalogued, and preserved in the school archives. As part of an effort to fill in those gaps, our students have identified, interrogated, and visualized the reasons for such silences and gaps. Students used computing methods to quantify and qualify this digital corpus, and the cumulative student work includes data visualizations, reports, and curated poster boards for presentation. By sharing the course workflow, design goals, pedagogical challenges, and student work, our students’ presentations bring attention to a collection that illuminates the particularly understudied experiences of Chinese students in the U.S.
