My dear Mr. Pillsbury:
Your letter of the 15th inst., is before me. I am not altogether surprised at Sun’s recent change of plan. With all their good points, Chinese boys as a rule seem to lack all sense of responsibility in matters of this kind, reserving to themselves the privilege of altering at will any plans previously agreed upon. I have had this experience in several instances and am only sorry that you have encountered it too. I fear that orders from Mrs. Hall or myself will prove of little worth. In Fayuen’s case our influence has not amounted to much.
