My dear Tu:
I have your letter of November 16 and am a bit surprised at its contents.
I can’t conceive of any high grade school giving a six days’ vacation at Thanksgiving time and expecting all of its pupils to leave during that period. Under the circumstances I am going to ask you to consult with your headmaster about your vacation plans and to ask him to wire me his recommendation. If he approves of your going to Syracuse, I will send a check on receipt of his message; but, in view of your father’s urgent request to me to insist that you should keep your expenses at the lowest possible level, I can’t naturally approve of this particular step without further information. Please ask your principal to send his message collect.
Bear in mind that the Christmas holidays, when you will necessarily have to plan for a vacation somewhere else than in Lima, is only a short distance away and that it behooves you, to the best of your ability, to save what money you can for the expense which must necessarily be incurred at that time.
Faithfully yours.
