My dear Tu:

I am distressed greatly hear that you have lost that money which I sent you recently, but it seems hard for me to believe that anyone would deliberately wander into your room in the night and take your pocketbook. School and college thieving, of which there is always some going on, is hardly ever done in just that way.

Under the circumstances, I am sending you a check to cover the loss but as the balance on your account is shrinking steadily and we can’t tell, in view of the upset conditions in China, when further remittance from your father will be made, I can only repeat my warning that every possible effort be made to keep your expenses down, for if the funds on hand give out, it will, of course, be necessary for you to give up school and go to work, and it would be no easy task for you to find a paying job.

Sincerely yours.
