Description
Typed letter sent from Dr. Alfred E. Stearns to K.Y. Tu. Sent monthly allowance. States English tutoring from Tu's Chinese friend would only work if the friend is exceptionally skilled in English. Explains it's not customary to pay ahead for tutoring and considering the sum, it would be best to get the best instruction possible.

My dear Tu,
I have your letter of recent date and am enclosing check to cover your August allowance as requested. I must apologize for not getting this to you more promptly but the summer vacation breeds carelessness I fear.
Your suggestion of tutoring in English with your Chinese friend is a bit unusual and I hardly know what to advise. If your friend is exceptionally good in his English I suppose he might do the work for you well. Otherwise I should consider the plan questionable at best. In any case it is not customary, to pay for such work in advance. Certainly your limited funds will not justify you in going to this expense unless you are to get the best instruction that can possibly be had.
With Best wishes, believe me,
Always sincerely yours.
