Dear Tom:
I have your interesting letter of recent date and am glad to learn of your plans for the coming summer. Whether the New York plan is altogether wise or not, I am not in a position to say. That must be determined by yourself and the way you take hold of the job there and resist or give in to the distracting influences that are invariably found in a big city. The final judgment, therefore, will have to be left until fall.
As to the expense involved, it seems to me to be pretty heavy. If your money is spent wisely, however, I am not averse to allowing you to meet all legitimate charges. On the other hand. I think it better to send the total sum in installments rather than in one lump. This will give you a chance to figure a little more closely what you are spending and how you are coming out. I am sending herewith, therefore, a check for three hundred dollars to help you close up the year at Middlebury and to take care of the opening expenses of the summer.
With all best wishes, believe me
Very sincerely yours.
