Dear Dr. Stearns:
As my summer school is drawing to a close, my room rent in the International House is expiring in a week. I shall need some more money for room from the 17th of August to about the 11th. of September, when I expect to go to Washington for an interview with Dr. Alfred Sze. In the mean time I shall need some more allowance for meals, etc. as well. So if you please, send me in your earliest convenience $100.00. As it is very hard for me [to] cash a check in New York, I would beg you to send this sum in form of money order if possible. Permit me to thank you. Sir, in advance in anticipation of you kindness.
In view of the unsettled conditions existing again in China at this very moment, it is my guess that it is Just possible for the Nationalist Government to cancel Dr. Tong’s special mission to this country, of which my father’s letter made mention. In that Case my return to China will be again postponed. This is entirely a guess on my part but some-how I am becoming more and more afraid that this shall be true. In case it should turn out as I now suspect, I shall like to see you at Andover just the same; because I have something to talk over with you about the taking of my post-graduate work somewhere else than Columbia. Frankly I don’t like Columbia or the city; in fact, I hate them; I cannot understand how anyone can study under this atmosphere. This, however, is, as I said, only on condition my trip home will be cancelled, but I mention it here so that you might be able to give me some help in getting into Harvard or some other place that is different from Columbia.
Hoping to hear from you soon. With the best wishes,
Obediently yours,
