Dear Dr. Stearns:

Please let me thank you for forwarding to me my father’s second cable message. It certainly contained good news, but I have been so often disappointed by good news that I am rather inclined to take this one with some skepticism. I shall, as my father requested, continue my studies at Columbia until [illegible]. Thank you, Sir, also for the check, the receipt thereof is herein enclosed. Please pardon me for making so many changes, my proposed plan to stay in some apartment with two of my friends did not succeed; because we were unable to find any suitable rooms which are within our financial limits. So the two of us are remaining in the International house; the third having gone to Harvard for his studies. I hope this change meets your approval.

Since I am not going to leave this country for quite a while to come, I shall not make that trip to Andover till some later time. Columbia opens on the 22nd of this month. I shall soon be busy preparing for registration and the like.

Obediently yours,
