Dear Tom:

I have had to delay answering your letter of April 19 because of the recent Trustees' Meeting and the extra work that that involved.

I do not think your father now intends that you should go back to China with Mary, whenever that happens to be, at least if you are in the midst of the process of getting your Master's Degree. Anyway, you should push ahead with the Yale plan with the full intention of completing the course, at least for the Master's Degree. The question of the Doctor's Degree and the extra year can be settled later.

I really can’t see my way clear to sanction the purchase of the Ford car at this time, In view of the fact that you are so soon to finish at Middlebury and are to take up the work at Yale not much later. Certainly at Middlebury there could be no good ground for an indulgence of this kind, which even the colleges regularly frown upon and grant only to a limited number of students, as you know. I should feel it necessary in any case to have your father’s sanction, and of course that would take time. So let’s not worry about this for the present, but round out your course at Middlebury with the best kind of a record on which to build your later work.

Ever yours,
