My dear Mary:

On my return to Andover last night. I found your letter of July 4 and am enclosing herewith another check for $300.00. though with some hesitation, for it seems to me that we are piling up expenses pretty fast, and if, as you intimate, the board and laboratory fees are the only extra items that we did not discuss when I gave you the $200.00 recently, you will be carrying a big balance. I do not see why this should not take care of your expenses well into the next college year. I hope so anyway. When it comes to the presents for your family,I am not capable of judging, of course, what you ought to spend, for I know what a tradition it is among the Chinese to be generous with their presents to their family and friends, and I have no wish to curtail any proper expense in that direction. On the other hand, you must be extra careful in the matter of other items when they come up, in view of this special outlay at this time.

By the way, Dr. Sze has recently written me saying that he had invited you for a visit this summer but that you had declined the invitation. He asked for information about you and the boys as to your whereabouts, plans, etc., and I gave him such light on the subject as I could. In the meantime I wish you would write him or Mrs. Sze and make your own statement as to your summer plans.

Faithfully yours,

AES/G
