Dear Dr. Stearns:

About a week or so ago I wrote you a letter concerning my intended entrance to Norwich University, but up until now I have received from you neither approval nor refusal. As the Dean of Norwich is in haste to get my answer, I hope very much that you look into the matter and kindly give me a definite reply in your earliest
convenience.

I was in New York city over the labor day weekend, having seen a few friends and visited some places of historic importance. I am sorry that I did not tell you about it beforehand but my departure was decided so suddenly. Now I am back again in Cambridge, where I plan to stay till the nineteenth of this month; since the dormitory in Amherst won’T open until that time.

In this letter I also wish to ask you to send my allowance for the fall term. As the two previous years five hundred dollars, I think, will do, but if you think it is too much, please send me any sum that you deem fit. Please send it to the above address; if you can do so before the 19th. otherwise to Amherst. Thank you, Sir.

Always faithfully yours,
