Dear Mary:

I have your telegram but am a good deal in the dark when it comes to answering your inquiry, since I do not happen to know much about the "Sally Hawkes" to whom your refer. Is she an Elmira College girl or one of the friends made in former schools? How well do you know her and what is her family like? If she is the right kind, as I have no doubt she is, I should be perfectly willing for you to spend a week-end with her provided only the college authorities fully approve of the plan. My impression is that the college does not look great favor on week-end visits for their students, at least early in the college course. This is exactly our position here, and I can understand fully why it is justified. If your Dean will write that she believes the trip wise and desirable thing in this instance, I shall be ready to wire my full approval; otherwise I strongly advise you to wait a little longer before you begin running away from the college and your friends there.

Very sincerely yours,
