My dear Charlie:
Thanks for your letter and Merry Christens and a Happy New Year.
Yes, I had read about that big fire in Amherst, and it reminded me of the night many years ago when, as a small boy, I watched a similar fire which destroyed the whole of that Main Street block from the Amherst House down to and including the Hunt’s Block where the bank is now located. I can imagine what a fire the old Amherst House must have made, but I hope that the now building that rises on its sight will add a little more to the beauty of the town than did that somewhat ungainly structure.
I am sending your Chinese candy to the Amherst address. Tom is here for a day or two on his way to Boston to visit Frank, and Mary by this time is no doubt in Springfield. I hope you can all get together before the vacation is over.
With best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, believe me always
Faithfully yours,
