Dear Charlie:

Many thanks for your good letter of April 14 which I have read with keen interest. I am enclosing a check for $300.00, as requested. If you need more, don't hesitate to let me know.

I am not at all surprised that you find yourself in a rather unsettled frame of mind just now. Conditions in your home land, as represented to us through the press, are enough to upset anyone so far away from home and friends as you are. On the other hand, I am confident that the thing is going to smooth out in time to China's ultimate advantage and therefore to the advantage of the whole world. In every great social upheaval excesses are bound to occur, and we often hear more of the excesses than we do of the real things beneath the surface that are going on and that eventually are to count for the most. So don't you let this worry you unduly, and make the most of this opportunity to store knowledge and develop habits and traits and ideals that will the better fit you to play a big and significant part in the reconstruction already just ahead. China will need badly men of your high ideals, level-headed-ness and intellectual ability.

With every best wish, believe me always

Most sincerely yours,
