Dear Alfred:
I have your recent letter and am disappointed at its contents. Having dealt for thirty years with boys, I know all about these complaints concerning food, and I regret more than I can tell you that you should have joined with boys who indulge in that type of "knocking." Some one has wittily said that a mule cannot kick when it is pulling or pull when it is kicking.
The boy who spends his time kicking cannot pull his share of the load, which means that he is not doing his main job as he ought to do it. I am glad now that I did not send you the money requested and for the reasons mentioned above.
Very sincerely yours,
