My dear Mr. Lynde:
Dr. Stearns has requested me to write you in regard to tutoring Alfred Tsai, a Chinese boy whom he has sent here to Cockermouth for the summer.
Alfred was at the Stearns School last year and the year before, and, as you probably know, took the examinations for the lower middle year at Phillips, failing them rather badly. Dr. Stearns suggested that in view of his examination papers you would probably be best able to tell what he should work at and to send him the right books if any are necessary.
Hoping that this will not put you to too great inconvenience, I am.
Sincerely yours,
