My dear Dr. Stearns:
I want to acknowledge receipt of both your letters of September 21st and 25th concerning the loss of a suit case belonging to Miss Tsai.
I am a little bit confused because in your letter of September 21st you indicate the missing bag had been found but in your later letter of September 25th you reverse this information, although I infer that your original advice was based on incorrect information and that the suit case is still missing.
I dropped the matter upon receipt of your letter of the 21st and am today arranging to have the Drake Hotel institute a detailed search and will report to you just as soon as I obtain results. We will of course confine our efforts to a search at the Drake Hotel under the circumstances, for your letter of September 25th is supplemented by one of the same date from the Chinese Legation at Washington indicating that the party had nine pieces of baggage, which is rather conclusive evidence that the suit case disappeared at the Drake Hotel.
Yours very sincerely
