Dear Sir:
Many thanks for the copy of 1918 catalogue of your Academy, which arrived a few days ago. I note the tuition has increased. When my boy Alfred enters your Junior class, I wish you would allow him to take French in place of Latin, & allow him to take German as his elective; for Harvard & Yale Universities allow Chinese to replace Latin. Alfred intends to enter the Mass. Inst . of Technology, & I would like him to have 16 ½ units of college preparatory work:—
English, Grammar & Composition. 1 ½ unit
English literature l ½ unit
French elementar 2 units
German elementary. 2 units
History:
Ancient History or
American History & Civil Government 1 unit
Mathematics :-
Elementary Algebra to Quadratics 1 ½ units
Intermediate Algebra- Quadratics Beyond ½ unit
Advanced Algebra ½ unit
Plane Geometry... 1 unit
Solid Geometry . 1 unit
Trigonometry & Logarithms 1 unit
College Preparatory Physios with laboratory work 1unit
College Preparatory chemistry with laboratory work 1 unit
German Intermediate ... 1 unit
Mechanical Drawing.... 1 unit
Total 16 ½ units.
By a unit of high school or academy work, is meant a year's work in a single subject; it being understood that the school year shall be not less than 36 weeks in length, that classes shall recite 5 times a week, that the recitation period shall be not less than 40 minutes long.
