Dear Dr. Stearns,
I regret very much to inform you that my son, Harvey S. L. Chang, who was to be admitted to your esteemed school, died in Shanghai on 16th. instant through typhoid.
All your kind promises to bring him under your care would not be realised but I feel just as grateful to you as if you have done so. With regard to my deposit of $ 1,000 which I think you have already received from the First national Bank of Boston, Boston, please hold the money to my credit until I write you later to transfer it in my favour of some of the boys already in your place.
Kindest regards,
Yours sincerely.
