My dear Tommy:

A letter from the Sheffield Registrar just received has about taken my breath away by announcing that you have received Official Warning because of scholarship deficiencies in German, English, English Composition, Chemistry, and Mathematics. I don’t think I need to tell you why I am distressed. The fact is, I am badly broken up over it, for I didn’t believe that you were going to give me any occasion for worry during your New Haven course. After what I have been going through with Chow I have been counting on your good record to more than overcome the disappointments recorded there. Don’t, I beg of you, go back on us now. You have left a fine record behind you here at Andover, even if it has not been over-brilliant in scholarship. I don’t expect you to lead the class, but I do expect you to maintain a clean and satisfactory record well above the passing grade. For goodness’ sake don’t allow yourself to get classed at the very outset of your college career with the loafers and dead-beats who are the bane of every college community, and in the majority of cases of little value in life after they get out. Write me soon and tell me that you are getting those deficiencies rapidly cleared up. I shall not rest easy until I get a report of this kind.

With best wishes, believe me,

Sincerely yours,
