Letter from Dr. Alfred E. Stearns to Tommy Lee, January 28, 1915
Description
Typed letter sent from Dr. Alfred E. Stearns to Tommy Lee. Heard Lee's chemistry grade is still low. Authorizes Lee to find a tutor. Believes low grade is not due to lack of effort. Discusses Han-Taeng Fan, a Chinese Andover student who recently passed away from disease.

My dear Tommy:
I have just learned that you are still pretty badly below grade in your Chemistry, and that this may prevent you from getting off probation. Of course at this distance I am not a very capable judge as to the circumstances involved in the case, but I have a feeling that you have really tried of late to meet the requirements made of you down there, and that the Chemistry failure cannot fairly be attributed therefore to recent lack of effort at least. Anyway it is so very essential that you should make good this deficiency promptly, that I am writing to authorize you to get hold of a good tutor at once, and for a week or two at least put in some extra hard work on the subject. If you are in any doubt as to whom to select, consult Mr. Vreeland, the Registrar, and I am sure he will be glad to help you. We must get that record of yours clear, and that at an early date. A weak or two of extra hard work just now may save you a year of trouble later. So go at it hard, and good luck to you!
I suppose you have heard that one of our recent arrivals from China died here early in the week. Han-Tseng Fan was the boy, and the case is indeed a sad one. Apparently he had overworked, and neglected entirely his exercise, so that when the disease once got hold of him he had little strength with which to resist. He want to the informary [sic] only Saturday, and died early Tuesday afternoon. His brother, a graduate of Boston Tech, last year, and now at Columbia, is staying with me here just now. He plans to give up his work in Columbia and return with the body to China.
With all good wishes to you, and hoping soon to hear that the Chemistry condition has been consigned to the scrap-heap, believe me.
Faithfully yours,
