Dear Mr. Stearns Your kind letter of yesterday has reached me, and I thank you for your response to my request for a scholarship for Seetoo. I have replied to the letter from his uncle in China that I would do what I could for him here, but that before I solicited for help him in this country it seemed to me that his friends and relatives in China ought to do something. Until I hear from them I will be personally responsible for the boy’s expenses. If you can arrange to have the boy provided with a room next year, it will of course simplify matters very much for me, as I shall them only have to provide for his board and miscellaneous expenses. From what I am able to learn of his father's affairs it is not likely that his family can do very much, but I think they ought to do what they can before the hat is passed about here. I am very glad to have your favorable opinion of Seetoo's character and ability. It would be a very great pity if his education were to be broken off, I will see that that does not happen.
