We have a good many nationalities presented here already. One of the most interesting and promising boys we have is a young Italian who under circumstances very similar to those existing in the present instance was sent here by Dr Huntington of New York. This boy, too, is preparing for the ministry, and we believe that he will make good. I mention these cases simply that you may understand that while we are accustomed to hold pretty rigidly to our regular courses, we are at the same time willing to make necessary allowances and exceptions for foreigners. Consequently I think we can do as much for your friend. From the catalogue which I am sending you under separate cover you will be able to see what our general courses are. As most of our boys go to Yale, these courses are arranged to meet in full the Yale requirements. I see no reason why such a course cannot be satisfactorily arranged I do not understand from your letter whether it is your wish to have the boy enter here this year, or whether you wish him to wait until the opening of the next school year. If you will advise me on this point I shall be glad to offer were satisfactory suggestions You will be able to tell from the catalogue the amount of ground covered by our classes term by term as well as during the entire year. Your work there will, I know, be of the greatest value, while the influence of the school are, as everybody recognizes, of the best. I do not wish ever to encourage a boy to leave a good school where he is making satisfactory progress. At the same time if you still feel at the end of the year that you wish to enter Andover, we shall be glad to have you and shall merely require a satisfactory letter form Mount Herman. I assume that you will have a difficulty in securing such a letter. Your assignment to classes here would be based in on entrance examinations and the record of your previous work. There is no reason why you should not be eligible for a scholarship here unless something should occur between now and the opening of our next school year to debar you. Such a contingency is of course act likely to occur, for I know you are in school with a serious purpose I have no doubt, too, that we shall be able to put you in touch with outside work which will prove remunerative to you. I am interested also to hear of your young Chinese friend. We have seven Chinese boys in the school at this time and they are remarkably bright set of fellows. The present Chinese Minister to this country, also an XX Andover man. If your friend wishes to enter here next year, I shall be very glad to consider his application for school and aid and I XX applying as early as this he can count on outside work to help defray his expenses. I enclose a scholarship application, which I would be glad to have him fill out carefully and return to me if he is at all likely to desire to enter here next fall. Stearns, Andover, Mass. Dear Mr. Stearns, You will recall that upon my introduction John J. Ungvary had some conference with you regarding the matter of entering Andover. Immediately after seeing you he went to Mount Hermon and remained there until about the first of May. He was then obliged to leave because his funds gave out and he was unable to obtain any work there to help him along. He has been serving for a little while as private secretary to the President of Lehigh University. He is now doing some commercial work in Philadelphia. He is desirous, however, of taking up his plans again in September and of entering Andover at that time if possible. He seems to be in doubt as to what he can count upon if he goes to Andover. He tells me that he understood from you that he would get a scholarship and that there would be a chance for him to work for his board. What he now desires is to know definitely what he might be able to do. My impression is that he is a very good secretary and stenographer. He has a large fund of general intelligence which is a good deal beyond his academic acquirements. As I understand it his feeling is that he would like to come to Andover if there was a fair chance of getting along without running seriously into debt. I am desirous that he should put this matter through if it can be done. He has placed himself in my hands and I should be greatly obliged if you would write me what you could definitely assure in the matter, I presume you are also in communication with Charles A. Anderson, who is also now at Lt. Hermon. He is a remarkably promising fellow. So far as such men are concerned, Mt .Hermon does not seem to be adequate. They have so many applicants there that apparently they let men come and go without taking any personal interest in them, I think that if they had grasped Mr. Ungvary’s situation it might have been arranged so that he might have remained there through the summer semester. Some funds which had been promised him did not materialize. They let him go without attempting to tide him over at all. I shall greatly appreciate it if you will let me know just what could be done for Mr. Ungvary in September. I think he will have just about money enough to get into Andover. Later on, if necessary, he could probably borrow. I think, however, it would be necessary to find some work for him at the start.
