I had not supposed that you expected me to pay Mr. Lee's bill, of which I had never received any notice until during the summer, out of my own pocket, or without the customary O.K. from the boy himself. As I was in the northern wilderness for my summer vacation and unable to get into communication with Lee until a few days ago only, I could not, as I thought I fully explained to you, comply with your earlier request, deeply as I regretted the fact and fully as I appreciated your own embarrassment. Since my recent interview with the boy, in the course of which I secured the long-sought approval of the bill, I have been immersed in school work, having been back at my desk for only two or three days. I have not reached your letter which, with others, is awaiting its proper turn but should have done so, in the natural course of events, within several days at the latest.
