Dear Charlie:
Many thanks for your nice letter of June 10th. It reached at the very busiest season of the year so that I am sending only an acknowledgment but with it the expression of the oldtime good will and friendly interest.
I am sorry that you have got to study through the summer but do hope that by September you will have cleaned the slate completely and be ready for the fresh and higher start. Are you going home at that time or will you pursue further work in this country?
With all best wishes, believe me
Ever faithfully yours

Dear Don:
I have your note of May 4. These Orientals are hard fellows to keep track of, and the trails often end in the clearings or woods. The last word I had from Charlie Tsai, or Kuo Fang, if you want his Chinese name, was from the Eastman Business College at Poughkeepsie, New York, where he was supposed to be taking the business course. I have had two or three postals from Europe, supposedly from Charlie’s older brother who is working his way back to China, and I have never felt quite sure whether he had decided to take the younger brother with him or not. If the Eastman Business College cannot give you any light, I think it is a safe guess that Charlie is either on his way to or has reached his native land.
Ever yours.

Dear Charlie:
Many thanks for your last letter. I do like to keep in touch with you and you have been fine about telling me of your new life and work. Continued success to you.
With the Exeter game only a little more than a week away the atmosphere up here is beginning to get charged with tie usual electricity so prevalent at this time in the fall, it looks like a hard and probably pretty close fight.
With all good wishes in which your marry friends would join if they new of my writing, believe me

My dear Tsai,
Your brother has just written me suggesting that in view of the uncertainty of his plans for the immediate future end his consequent inability to determine how much money he will require to carry him along I should send you two or three hundred dollars to be dispensed by you in his behalf as needed. The suggestion seems to me a good one. I find, however, that the balance of are funds in my hands sent me by your father on K. P.’s account amounts to only three hundred and sixty dollars and fifty five cents. Accordingly I am sending you check for that amount, -$360.00-. As I understand that K.P. is to return to China with you in the near future I assume that you will have no objection to handling his money for him while he is still in this country. I do not desire to shirk any proper obligations in the matter, but it seems to me that this would be the natural and probably the easiest way to deal with the situation in view of the facts referred to above. I hope that you will agree.
I have just received a letter from our old friend Mr. Chow Shou Son telling me that he is in New York and hopes to visit me in Andover this week. Naturally I am terribly disappointed for I shall not be in Andover again until September. Possibly I can persuade Mr. Chow to pay me a visit up here, but I fear he will think the journey too great. Mr. Chow did everything for me when I was in China in a dozen years ago and I should dearly love to try to help make his visit to this country at this time as pleasant and profitable as possible. He writes from the Vanderbilt Hotel in New York. .
I do hope that the summer up in the mountains is doing your wife a world of good and that she will soon be as well as or better than ever. My heartiest good wishes to you both. Am I going to
get another glimpse of you before you return to China?
Ever sincerely yours.

My dear Tsai:
Thanks for your letter. I am forwarding it to Amherst in the hope that it will help meet the requirements for you up there. If anything further is needed from you, I will advise you promptly .
My apologies for sending you Charlie Sun’s bill. I must have glanced at the first name and taken it for granted that there was only one "Charlie" around here just now from your part of the world.
A happy and prosperous summer to you!
Faithfully yours,

My dear Helen:
I am enclosing your allowance for May plus $10.00 which your father has asked me to send you as a birthday present from your mother and himself. He writes me, by the way, that the three children, two sons and a daughter, of his friend Mr. Chang wish to come to Andover next year and be under my charge. Your father suggests that the girl follow you to Whittier for a year and the boys follow Alfred to Mont Vernon. I do not know the Changs, of course, but I have written your father this morning that I would be glad, as usual, to do what I could to guide them in their American life and work.
Charlie, who is staying with me just now, as he has changed his business to Boston, took your stamp order in with him a day or two ago and tells me that he has delivered it to the Boston agent of Scott Stamp Company who will see that it is executed promptly.
With all good wishes, believe me
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Sun:
Please accept my very hearty thanks for your moot generous and wonderfully beautiful Christmas present. The lacquer vases were forwarded to me by Minister Sze, with a note saying that they had been sent at your request. They are about as attractive as anything that ever came into my house and will be much admired by those who see them. To me, however, beside their intrinsic beauty with its natural appeal, there will always be the stronger attraction based on the friend and the friendly thought back of them.
I have heard from or seen all of the children at various times during the Christmas holiday season. Arthur is working at his new position and wrote me only a day or two ago from Amherst, where he had gone to get a glimpse of Charlie and also in the hope of seeing Mary, too, at Springfield, where the latter is visiting one of her school friends. I had a nice letter from her only this morning, and she seems happy and well.
The morning’s mail brings me also a letter from Charlie who has Just returned to Amherst after a brief visit to New York. The big city does not appeal to him at all, and he writes me that he will not again leave the college town when vacation comes.
Tom came through his first term at Middlebury College with a much better record than I anticipated. He stopped off here for a couple of days at the beginning of the vacation and is now visiting Frank Lin in Cambridge where he also has a chance to see Arthur from time to time.
Altogether all four of the children seem to be making pretty steady and even progress this year. An invitation to speak to the girls at Elmira College, which I accepted a few weeks ago gave me a good opportunity to see Mary and look over the situation at her college. She tells me that she finds some of her work rather difficult, but her teachers seem to think that she is going to be able to master these difficulties and handle the course satisfactorily. She seems to have made some good friends, too, and to have fitted nicely into the college life.
Please accept again my thanks for your many kindnesses to me and my heartiest good wishes to you and yours for a happy, healthful, and prosperous new year.
Sincerely and gratefully yours,

Dear Mary:
Thank you for the contents of your recent telegram of inquiry.
Under the circumstances it would probably be necessary for you to be vaccinated again and at once, for the Elmira medical requirement demands vaccination within a period of five years previous to admission. You should report the situation, therefore, at once to the college authorities and follow their instructions.
As to board, I can't, of course, tell you at this distance where to go. You ought to be able to select competently for yourself. If there is a regular college dining hall for most, or a large number, of the student body, by all means board there, at least for the first term or year. When you know the situation better, you can later select something else if you prefer. Ask the Registrar or some competent teacher for advice if you are still unable to decide.
Very sincerely yours,
