My dear Dr. Stearns,

I do not know how to express my appreciation for the persevering attention you have given to Kuo Fong, it is a great relief to me to know that he is taken better care of than at home. Please do not feel too concerned over his attack of nervousness. It was not altogether a surprise to me because I know he had always been so affected. This complaint seems to run in the family. His brother Kuo Tso has been under electrical treatment for this illness, and is now quite recovered. Constant worrying, I believe, is the main cause, and I agree with you that with less occasions for excitement, Kuo Fong should be able to control his attitude of mind and thus make a decisive gain towards his physical improvement, and general welfare.

Concerning, his plans for entering Amherst this fall, I have no particular objection, although, personally, I would like to have him in a business school, in this matter, however I do not want to force him against his own wishes. As long as he obtains your approval before actually carrying out his ideas, I shall be quite satisfied.

Since receiving Kuo Fong’s letter, I have already sent you a check covering his overdrawn account. I am sorry this has happened so whenever due to some unexpected expense the regular allowance will not be sufficient, I would like to be notified if possible before the fund becomes exhausted so as not to bother you with making loans for overdrawing. His August remittance will be made as usual.

To discuss the present situation in China is very discouraging. We have a government which has no authority and consequently cannot be held absolutely responsible for any action or lack of same. As an example of its powerlessness, the bandits who held up our only train de luxe are holding daily conferences on an equal footing with our Minister of Communications over conditions and demands submitted by the bandits for the release of foreign and Chinese travellers who were captured and kept as hostages, still we are hoping for the best. A change of the Cabinet is again expected; something might be accomplished by the new administration.

Among the older boys who had been under your guardionship, I know quite a few. in fact I have three in my own family. S.S.Kwan and Tommy Lee are both in Tientsin, and they both remember Andover well. A few copies of the Bulletin come regularly and these chaps often gather around to talk of their old days.
Please accept my thanks for your kindness and your constant keeping me in touch with Kuo Fong's progress.

                  With best regards, I remain,
Yours very sincerely,</text>

Andover, Mass., U. S. A.

My dear Mr. Stearns:-

I am enclosing a draft on the International Banking Corporation, New York, for $1660.00 U. S. Currency, in your favor, which will pay for the year's expenses of my son Kuo Fang, who is now with you.

I wish to take this opportunity to again thank you for your kindness in looking after his welfare and his education. I feel that he cannot possibly be placed in better hands and I am greatly indebted to you. Kuo Fang writes me often and tells me about his experiences in America and of your kindness towards him, and I have no cause for worry.

His work as Chief Locomotive Superintendent of the Tientsin-Pukow Railway keeps my son Kuo Tsao very busy, and he tells me that he has not written to you as often as he should and as he would like to. But he promises to write you a good long letter in the near future and tell you all the news.

My other son Kuo Pao is in business as Manager of the Pacific Trading Company at Hankow. His business takes him from one city to another and he is continually on the go, which explains his failure to write to you.

I recall with a great deal of pleasure the good times we had together in Hongkong on the occasion of your last visit to China several years ago, and hope that sometime soon you may have another opportunity to visit us once more and see some of the changes that have come over this country.

With kind personal regards.

Gratefully and sincerely yours,

Mr. Tsai Shou Kie
5 Race Course Road
Tientsin, China.

My dear Mr. Tsai :

Let me acknowledge receipt of your kind and interesting letter of February 6th and the draft for $1,660.00 to be credited to the account of your son Kuo Fong.

I am enclosing herewith a statement of the boy’s account to date together with the receipts for the various bills that have been paid. As you can well imagine, it has been impossible for me to keep the boy’s expenses down within the limits which obtained in the cases of his two older brothers. The cost of everything in this country has jumped so tremendously since the war that every outlay involves an increase of from fifty to a hundred per cent. We have struggled to keep our own school expenses down to the lowest possible limit, and with that end in view have only recently finished a campaign for a million and a half dollars, a campaign which I am glad to say has resulted most successfully.

So far as I can Judge, Kuo Fong has not displayed any tendencies to extravagance. He seems to appreciate the situation, and to all appearance is not spending any more money proportionately than his older brothers. It seems to me only fair under the circumstances to increase his monthly allowance for incidentals a bit; for fifteen dollars a month has no greater purchasing power than did the ten dollars allowed his brothers. I hope that you will approve of this action on my part. For the sake of us all I most certainly that prices will ere long begin to drop a bit; for it has been a hard pull these past two or three years, especially for the professional man.

Thank you so much for telling me what the boys are doing in China. It is good to hear of them once more; and I certainly hope that they are fulfilling all your ambitions for them and proving that the American education and experience were of some real and lasting value. Certainly we have never had in our school three finer boys than these boys of yours. Kuo Fong is immensely popular with boys and teachers alike, and it is a real delight to have him here. In his work, too, he seems to be taking hold with good spirit and making definite progress.

I shall never forget the good times my friends gave me in China a few years back and the unbounded friendliness and good will which characterized their attentions to me at that time. It is one of the brightest spots in my memory to-day, and if I long enough and can find the time and money to do it, I hope to get one more glimpse of your interesting country and some of my good friends out there before I die. In my judgment the stricken world to-day can loam much from China and Chinese ideals.

With kindest regards to the various members of your family and to any of my good friends out there who have not forgotten me, believe me always

Very sincerely yours,</text>

My dear Tsai:

Your very generous and interesting letter of May 26th has just reached me. Kuo Fang has just left us to attend the Student Conference at Silver Bay, N.Y., Where lie will pass a week with a picked group of boys from our leading schools and colleges, after which he intends to go to the summer camp in Maine where he passed last summer with what seems to me real profit.

I appreciate your willingness to allow me to continue to handle the boy’s finances without rendering you detailed reports. Please bear in mind, however, that I shall be very glad to render such reports if over and whenever you desire. The boy is proving in every way a most acceptable member of the school community, and appears to be making steady program in his work.

Thank you, too, for permitting me to see the snapshots of Kuo-Pao and his bride. I shall eagerly await the opportunity. Please remember me very warmly to him, and believe me, with kindest personal regards,

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. Tsai Shou Kie,

Tientsin, China.

My dear Mr. Tsai:
Let me acknowledge receipt of your letter of November 10th, enclosing draft on the International Backing Corporation of York for sixteen hundred dollars ($1,600.00), to be credited to the account of your boy, Kuo-fang. I am enclosing statement to date by which you will rote that there is a balance at the prevent time remaining your son's favor of $452.04.

We have so many Chinese boys here this year that I feel more closely in touch with your good country than I have felt since my actual visit there a few years ago. Hardly a day goes by that I do not receive letters from China or send letters there myself. Only two days ago our latest arrival appeared from Tientsin, Mr. Quincy Sheh, whom you no doubt know.

I am glad to report that Kuo-fang still appears to be getting ahead, but sometimes I am a bit fearful lest his exceptional popularity among the boys in general may tend to upset his equilibrium a bit, but so far I have noted no indications that the effect has been anything but temporary.

With kindest personal regards, believe me always.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Dr. Stearns

I wish to thank you for your kind letter of December 7, 1920 acknowledging receipt of draft for $1600.00 and informing me that there was still a balance of $452.04 remaining to the credit of Kuo-fang.

I am highly pleased from a perusal of the statement which you sent me to note that Kuo-fang has been able, in addition to his regular studies, to find the time and energy to take part in so many outside activities. It is my sincere hope that his popularity among the boys will not give him that affliction which is known among Americans as the "swell head". May I ask you, in loco parentis, to do me the great favor of especially seeing to it that Kuo-fang restricts the growth of his head to due proportions?
Phillips Andover is undoubtedly increasing in popularity among Chinese boys, and I am glad to learn that the large number with you now helps to keep you in close touch with our country.

Kuo-tsao and Kuo-pao both wish to join me in sending to you our kindest personal regards.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Tsai:

Let me thank you for your very generous letter of January 10. You have given me quite a contract, but I will do what I can, though frankly admitting my limitation, to see that Kuo-fang keeps his head within proper bounds. I do not believe that the boy is in serious danger of losing his balance, though undue popularity is always a dangerous thing for any fellow of that age. I have always found the youngster exceedingly responsive to suggestion and advice, and I have no reason to believe that he will not continue to maintain this friendly attitude towards me and such suggestions as I may feel called upon to give him from time to time.

I feel more than ever in touch with China this year, as I have under my own roof five Chinese boys and one girl. Three of these youngsters, including the girl, are full members of my regular family circle, but the other three boys are merely rooming in the house and attending the school, but naturally I see a good bit of then all. It is a most interesting and delightful experience, for it would be difficult to find anywhere more agreeable or responsive members for my household. Very likely you know the parents of some of these youngsters. Those in my immediate family are the sons and daughter of Mr.Sun Chung Yin of Tientsin. Mr. She also comes from Tientsin, and Mr.Kung’s home is in Shanghai.

Please remember me to Kuo Tsao and Kuo Pao, both of whom I still remember with the friendliest feelings, and believe me with personal regards

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Stearns,

I enclose draft for $1600.00 U.S.Currency for the expenses of my son Kuo Fang. Please acknowledge receipt of this in your next letter. I hope Kuo Fang is getting along all right and not giving you too much trouble.

From what I hear, he is progressing nicely, thanks no doubt to your kind supervision. His letters indicate that he is quite happy and enjoying himself. He writes of his visiting Mr. Wickham of Hartford, my old schoolmate, and of their going to a circus' together and so forth. I am glad to notice the great improvement in his English. He also writes of playing football and other games, and I therefore rest assured that you are making a regular man out of him.

By the way, I sent you a photograph through Mr.Wickham some time ago. I wonder if you have received it yet. Mr. Wickham was in China a few months ago, so you might find it interesting to talk with him about present conditions in China if you should happen to run across him.

Right in the wake of the great famine came heavy rainfall and floods. We are now seriously afflicted with floods in several sections of the country. Some portions of our railroads have to suspend traffic on this account.

We also have with us resumed fighting in Hupeh, Hunan and Kwangsi, and we do not know what the outcome will be.

But we are looking forward with great expectations to the coming Pacific Conference in your country, and we hope that we with the help of your people we shall ultimately procure rights and justice in our international affairs.

Wishing you a most successful school year, and thanking you for all that you are doing for my son,

I remain,
Yours sincerely,

Tsai Shou Kie

My dear Mr.Tsai:

Let me acknowledge the receipt of and thank you for your most interesting letter of August 31 and the accompanying draft for $1600 which I am depositing, as requested, to the credit of your boy Kuo Fang. The youngster appears to be getting on very well, though he has not made the high record in scholarship that we could all like to see. In this respect, however, he has done somewhat better of late and his record at the tutoring camp this summer was exceptionally good. I am hoping that the Andover record this year will be the best of his course to date. In every other way, the boy is open to little criticism, though I cannot help feeling that his general good nature and the popularity which this brings to him with his mates must be held in check a bit if they are not to exhort a bad influence on the boy’s character as a whole. In my relations with him, he his all that could be desired, for he never hesitates to accept my criticisms with good spirit and to do his best apparently to carry out such suggestions with good spirit as I have made to him from time to time. I earnestly hope that when he returns to China later he will be in every way qualified to meet and help solve effectively the big problems that your country confronts at this time. It is certainly a real pleasure to have had a part in preparing these boys for the great opportunities which lie ahead of them in their homeland.

Yes, the photograph reached me safely, only a few days ago however, and I have not had the chance until today to thank you for it. It reposes in my study and I shall always value it highly, chiefly for its constant suggestion of your friendship and your confidence in me as well as the memories it prompts of personal kindness to me when I met you in China a few years ago.

I am sorry to hear that you are still troubled with hard times in China in the way of floods and political disturbances. It seems as if the whole world had been compelled to face more than its proper allowance of hardship and disaster during recent years. The saddest part of it is that most of these troubles were man’s own making, though, of course, this cannot be said of famine and flood in China. I only hope that better times are ahead for us all.
Please remember me next warmly to the other members of your family and accept for yourself this expression of friendship and goodwill. I wish that I might be privileged to meet you again some day either in your country or in my own.

Sincerely and gratefully yours.
