Mr. Tsai Kuo Tsao
5 Race Course Road
Tientsin, China.

My dear Tsai:

I am venturing to write you about a matter in which I know you will be interested, but in which I cannot tell to how great a degree you may care to participate. Let me tell my story anyway before you decide.

You have doubtless been receiving bulletins from time to time similar to those sent to all old Andover men scattered over the world, and in which you have been informal of the plans, now being completed, to launch a campaign for the sum of a million and a half dollars for the school; one third of the amount in question to go toward a manorial building for the eighty-three Andover boys who gave their lives in the war; the balance to be invested and the interest applied to teachers’ salaries. You are also doubtless aware that similar campaigns are being conducted by nearly all the leading colleges in America at this time, the necessity for such action being forced upon us by the tremendously-increased cost of living of the present day. If this is true, I hardly need to go into details explaining the methods of procedure. What I can say now is that the plans are practically completed and that the campaign itself will be started within the next few days. Already some three hundred thousand dollars are in sight, and I feel confident that the balance will come; though some hard work may be necessary in order to finish up the job.

The main piece of machinery by which the work will be carried on is that already in existence in connection with the old Alumni Fund and the various class agents who have handled that Fund for their respective classes in recent years. As the result of a recent conference in New York it was decided to supplement this piece of machinery by appointing local committees covering various sections of the country and following the lines adopted by the American Red Cross and other big organizations in their drives connected with war charities. The enclosed memorandum will indicate what we have in mind. The chairmen for these various sections have already been selected and are now at work.

I happened to mention the fact to some of our alumni who are most interested in the scheme that we had a number of boys in China and that it would be a mighty nice and significant thing if some contribution could come from that source, even if a small one. All were delighted with the suggestion and asked me to take it up with some of the boys in the far East. Your name occurred to me at once as that of the best fellow to take charge. I am wondering therefore whether you would be willing to allow us to add to the list enclosed another section, called wither the Chinese or the Eastern Division, as you prefer, and in that case if you would be willing to take charge of conducting a campaign among the fellows in that vicinity. There must be a good many of our old Chinese boys now in China. Many of them, I know, are extremely loyal to the school; some of them, I am confident, would be glad to have their names included as contributors to this big and significant fund. Personally I cannot help feeling that it would be a wonderful thing for the school if it could be announced that our students in the far East had formed a section and had joined in this undertaking. It would tend to give the school a stamp and prestige certainly unique and, in view of the school’s standing, I think deserved.

Please think this over anyway, and if you can, give us a lift. Among the older men there are several, like Mr. C. L. Chow in Hong Kong, who would gladly take hold with you, I am confident. As a matter of fact, if you follow the plan adopted by others, you will appoint a sub-committee of a few fellows scattered in various parts of China where they would be most likely to come into touch with our old Andover boys. I shall hope to send you within a few days, if I am not able to enclose it in this letter, a list of Chinese students and their addresses as we now have them.
With kindest personal regards, and trusting that you win be willing, for the sake of your old school and your old Andover friends, to Join with us in this big work, believe me always

Very sincerely yours,</text>

My dear Tsai:

Notice of your coning wedding has just reached ne, and my thoughts are carried back both to your own days here in Andover and to my own sojourn in your native land. How the time does fly and her faces do change! Still the memory of the old days and the faces lingers; and every little thing, like the notice of your wedding, that tends to freshen up the perspective is doubly welcome.

This is just a hasty note written at a busy season of the year to tell you that I appreciate more deeply than I can say your thoughtfulness in sending me this little testimony to your present doings and future prospects and to wish for you and your good wife every best thing that life has to offer during the days ahead. Don’t forget that you always have, and will have, some good warm friends back here in the country where you secured a part at least of your education - friends who will always be glad to hear of your successes and ready to stand by and help, if they can, whenever cloudy days come.

Please give my warmest regards to the various members of your family, and assure them that the youngest representative now with us has won the hearts of us all and gives every evidence of making good.

My dear Dr. Stearns:

I wish to thank you for your very kind letter of March 18 telling me about the progress of my son Kuo-fang and enclosing a statement of his expenses from June 19, 1919 to March 13, 1920. I am very much pleased to notice that nis expenses have not been unreasonable and am confident that under your care and guidance he will always be inspired to do what is right.

In future may I ask you not to trouble about sending an itemized account of his expenses and the covering vouchers. I shall be satisfied with knowing only the sum total of his expenses.

You will be interested to know that Kuo-pao was married two and a half weeks ago and he and his bride are now living under my roof. They are both very happy and it does my heart good to see my new daughter-in-law. I am sending Kuo-fang some snapshots taken on the day of the wedding which you may ask him to show you if you are interested. The bride and groom were so busy on the day of the wedding that friends did not have the chance to snap them. I hope soon to send a snapshot of Kuo-pao and his bride to Kuo-fang and then you will be able to see whether there has been a change in your former pupil. How I wish you could have been with us. The ceremony was carried out in strictly old style and was indeed more interesting and impressive than some of the modern Chinese weddings.

With kind personal regards,

Yours very sincerely</text>

My dear Tsai:

Your interesting letter of July 30th is before me. Accept my humble apologies for the mistake which I appear to have made in assigning a new wife to you. I can’t recall now who it was that told me that you had married, but it was one of your countrymen and my good friends who made the blunder, or who permitted me to make; I cannot say which. Anyway I am sorry and I trust that no harm has been done. You see I naturally assumed that there would be so many claimants for your hand that you could not remain single long - all of which should be taken as complimentary rather than the reverse.

Don’t worry about the Alunni Fund campaign. We have more than reached our goal, so that the actual money is not needed at this time; though, of course, the school will profit by all It can secure. What I was most concerned about was that in this campaign the really International Character of the school, which I believe is unique among perhaps all schools of America, should be emphasized; and I felt that If we could announce a contribution from our alunni in China, however, small the amount, it would mean a lot to all concerned. I don’t care, therefore, whether the sum in question should amount to $5.00 or $5,000.00, provided the opportunity were given us to make formal notice of the fact that the loyalty of our old Andover boys in China, of whom you know there are now many, had prompted them to send in a contribution from the other side of the world.

I think that before long I shall have to give up my American connections and become a naturalized Chinese citizen, residing abroad. Only a for days ago I received a letter from our good friend, M. C. Liang, advising me that either six or seven Chinese boys and girls were to arrive in Andover some time this month; and that during their stay in America, where they are to secure their education, they were to be absolutely under my authority and charge. This is a pretty big responsibility, but I cannot help being immensely touched by the confidence which Mr. Liang's decision implies; and I shall, of course, be ready and glad to give to the undertaking my very best wisdom and thought.

Your young brother continues to make a good record and good friends wherever he goes. He has done excellent work at the summer camp where he has been this summer; and I expect to see him back here again within a few days. The Andover record this coming year ought to be even stronger than the one of the year just passed.

Please remember me to the other members of your good family and any other of my friends Whom you may happen to run across in China, and believe me always, with sincere regards,

Faithfully yours

My dear Tsai:

You are often in my thoughts, especially during those mid-winter months when my memory frequently takes me back to China and the happy days .

I passed there several years ago. So much of the pleasure of that time was due to your own generous and friendly interest, as well as that of other old Andover boys of your time, that I am always mindful of my debt of gratitude, a debt which I fear that I shall never be able to fully repay. Only last night our good friend, Kwan, took dinner and passed the evening with me at my home; and in the course of our visit we talked over China and the old follows now over there, most of whom, I take it, are doing such work in various lines, How I would like to drop in on you all, and how I would relish a good Chinese meal such as I once enjoyed with you out on the river at Canton and in the more modern, luxurious apartments of the Hong Kong "Sherry’s”. If my life lasts long enough and opportunity offers, I mean some day to see your land again. Let us hope it will be before any of the old men have departed from this climate.

This is just a brief note which I hope will reach you at about the New Year’s season, and will carry with it hearty and friendly greetings for that festive occasion and the days ahead. Success and good luck to you always!

Most sincerely yours,
