My dear Dr. Stearns, I have just received your letter of Dec. 31st, and am indeed glad to learn of the desire of Thomas Sun to receive baptism. It would give me very great pleasure to come to Andover to perform the ceremony, for I have the greatest admiration for his father and consider him one of my most valued friends. I have, in fact, been looking forward to a visit to the two boys and their sister ever since my arrival in this country and presenting the letter which Mr. Sun gave me on the eve of my departure from Shanghai. Thus far the international Committee has kept me very busy in this part of the country, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, so that a trip to Andover has not been possible. After the first week in February, however, I shall be more free and do not see any reason why I should not come up to see them at that time. I am due in Cleveland, Ohio, the 14th of this month; but if there is any urgency in the matter I could perhaps come for Sunday, the 13th—though this would not be as convenient as a later date. Thank you for writing to me.
