Much as I regret the contents of your note I am indeed grateful to you for writing me of Tommy Lee's delinquencies. As our examinations are rapidly approaching, I thought it well to let you know just how Tommy Lee is getting along. He has met the requirements in all of his courses except that in Chemistry. This seems to cause him considerable difficulty and he is reported as having a grade of 1.5 which means that unless he does remarkably well during the present week he will be excluded from the examination. Probably a word of encouragement from you would be of real benefit to him just now.

Should he succeed in passing all of his examinations, his Official Warning will be removed and he will be again in full standing in his Class.

Thank you very much for your frank letter in regard to Tommy Lee. I am very anxious that the boy should get off probation, and so far as I can judge I really believe he has been making for sometime an effort to do so. I am writing him by this mail, authorizing him to get a good tutor in Chemistry if he needs a bit of help just now to get him started in the right direction. If you have a chance to advise him in the matter of selection of the right person, and perhaps the nature of the work he ought to do, I shall consider it a great personal favor and be deeply indebted to you.

Again thanking you for writing me about the case, and with kind personal regards, believe me,

I am sorry that it is necessary for we to inform you that Tommy Lee has been placed On Probation because of more than the allowed number of absences. I have had a talk with him and it seems that he did not thoroughly understand our rule regarding the number of unexcused absences which a student on Official Warning is allowed to take. He has taken several over the allowed number this term and, therefore, this action is necessary. He clearly understands that it will be impossible for him to take more than four more without making it necessary for him to leave the School and assures me that he will endeavor to make his attendance record more satisfactory. This Probation will naturally be removed at the end of sixty days if his scholarship record is satisfactory at that time.

I was very sorry that you were not at Andover when I was there week before last. Although my visit was brief, I enjoyed it immensely and hope that I shall be able to repeat it sometime in the near future.

My dear Mr. Vreeland:

I am indeed distressed by the contents of your letter, and hardly know what to say, I cannot believe there is any reasonable excuse for Tommy Lee’s delinquencies, for he stood far higher here than did many of the boys who are having no trouble in meeting the Sheffield requirements. I shall do my best to get hold of the boy during the vacation, and see if I can get at the bottom of the trouble. In the meantime, anything you can do at that end will be deeply appreciated I assure you. Lee is in a sense a personal charge of mine while he is in the country, and I am genuinely and deeply concerned about him.

Faithfully yours,</text>

I am very sorry to have to inform you that Tommy Lee is reported as very deficient in Drawing, German, and Physics for the present term. I have not yet had an opportunity to talk with him and for that reason I do not know the reason for such a lapse. I shall endeavor to see him soon and try to ascertain the source of the trouble. It will be necessary for him to show a decided improvement if he is to successfully pass all of his examinations for the year. You say that he was a good student at Andover and should do well. If this is the case, it seems to me that there must be some underlying cause for his poor showing. I shall do my utmost to be of assistance to him and should be glad of any co-operation which you can give me.

Trusting that I may be able to make a better report after the next Freshman Faculty meeting, on May 10th, I am,

Very truly yours,

                <text>My dear Tommy:

Your letter reached me this morning, and only two or three days after a most distressing one which was sent me by your Registrar. I hardly know which one to bank on. According to Mr. Vreeland, your work is in extremely bad shape, and you yourself in a very dangerous position. From your letter I should judge that the situation was decidedly better than formerly. My advice to you is to consult the Registrar at once and make sure just where you stand. I am afraid you will find the situation is distinctly worse than you paint it in your letter to me.

I am perfectly willing to accept your explanation of the probation situation. That in itself need not worry us greatly, provided you mean business, for the matter is wholly in your hands. The low standing in your studies, however, is a much more serious affair, and I cannot account for it. Boys who stood distinctly below you in Andover are doing much better work than you at New Haven. The only inference I can draw is that you have not been applying yourself with the serious purpose that should have characterized your effort. For Goodness' sake just stop up short and take a good account of stock and see where you stand. If you were to flunk out at Sheff. it would be a lasting disgrace to you, to the school, and a blow to your family and friends from which they would hardly recover. You certainly cannot afford to trifle with a situation fraught as this is with so many possibilities of evil and good.

Faithfully yours,</text>

Thank you for your letter received this morning, and for the assurances it contains that your work is not so bad as I had been given to understand. My advice to you is to see Mr. Vreeland at once and talk the situation over with him carefully and fully. If your work is as bad as Mr. Vreeland indicates, you ought to know it, and from headquarters. If it is as good as you think it is, Mr. Vreeland ought to know it and give you credit accordingly. In any case you and Mr. Vreeland should come to a clear understanding of the situation at once.
I am inclosing check for $25. as requested. Kindly sign and return the receipt. I hope you will be able to get some rest and enjoyment out of the vacation.

Your reference to the news you have had of Chang interests me greatly. I fear, however, that his father is making a serious mistake in putting the boy into school again just now, especially if the demands made upon him do not require him to study. In my judgment Chang ought to be put at some good hard work for a year, until he has had time to appreciate the opportunities he has thrown away and has developed a desire to recover lost ground.

With all good wishes, believe me,
