Whatever Alfred really needs in the way of camp equipment I shall be perfectly willing to have you purchase. On the other hand since he will have each slight use for most camp material I should much prefer to have him rent these things for the current summer if this can be done. As for the tutoring I hardly know what to say. Alfred tried the exams for admission to our Lower Middle year but failed them pretty badly. In my opinion he needs more than anything else some stiff drill in English, grammar and composition, spelling, etc., and work in Algebra and perhaps Arithmetic. He ought to be able to take our second year French but I doubt whether he can make it and I imagine that it would be a waste of time to work on that subject this summer. My advice would be for you to write, or telephone to Mr. Lynde who is in charge of the admissions at Andover and ask him what he thinks Alfred should work at in view of his previous work at Mont Vernon and the character of his entrance examination papers. My only basis for it is the examinations he wrote in June and similar experiences with other boys. The examinations showed that he hasn’t the working knowledge he ought to have in both Arithmetic and Algebra. I believe he should tutor first in Arithmetic. If, in addition to being able to answer correctly such questions as occur on our past Arithmetic examinations he can be prepared to enter Algebra [2?], work in Algebra should be taken up this summer. I am mailing several of the former examination papers. In English, the boy should have practice in spelling, grammar, and composition. At first he showed an imperious attitude and seemed to expect things to be done just about his way. It was a manner that tended to make him very unpopular with the other boys, and we paid special attention to trying to make him see that he was not better than the others and that he would receive no special favors of such a type as his money has unfortunately seemed to give him previously. As a result his whole method of going at things changed, and I think that he not only enjoyed camp more because of having more friends, but also that he left with the reputation of being a good fellow. I hope that he does not slip back into his former attitude because, from other boys, I have heard that it made him unpopular at the Stearns School, and I know that it would not gain him any friends at Andover. Mr. Mills gave Alfred ten hours tutoring, nearly all in English. I hope it helps.
