<text>My dear Mrs. Nye:

Thank you for your note, and don’t apologize, please, for your delay.

I am glad that you decided that you could conscientiously accept that check. It is little enough, and I know from past experiences that our good Chinese friends are more than desirous of reimbursing us for all financial and, so far as practicable, other outlays we make in behalf of their children. It was some time before I could bring myself to charge anything when these appealing youngsters were in my own home, as they were for years, but their presence invariably involved expense, and to an extent which my limited means would not honestly justify. I simply had to come to the point of trying to figure out what that expense actually amounted to and charging it to their accounts, making clear to the parents concerned the why and wherefore of it all and receiving from them in turn the heartiest approval and endorsement. Where the youngsters dropped in on me for a day or two here and there, as they often did, I still preferred to allow them, this privilege gratis, something that I should have liked to do immensely at all times, had I been a man of means. Where they stayed for definite times, the charges were imposed on a basis, as nearly as I could figure it, which involved only the additional expense incurred by their presence. I could well understand that, if you were reimbursed for all of the actual expenses you have incurred in behalf of the Tsais, the $100.00 which you received from me recently would not begin to cover everything.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mrs. Nye:

I am somewhat at a loss to know just how best to plan for the Christmas vacation of Helen and Alfred Tsai. It is not practicable for me to care for them in my own home, and I do not at all like the idea of having then drift around here, making their headquarters at the Phillips Inn, but with no actual program to follow.

I have just inquired of Sister Mary Antony, the head of Saint Mary's School, whether the school could provide Helen during holiday season, and have learned that this is not only possible but customary each year in the cases of a few girls. Under this arrangement, Miss Antony assures me that Helen could visit New York several days to see the museums and other places of interest, under proper chaperonage, of course. On the whole, I like the idea.

Miss Antony further suggests that she is likely to come to Boston soon after Christmas for something like a week, and would be glad to bring Helen with her at that time if I care to have her do so. I am writing, therefore, to ask you with the utmost frankness, which I hope you will reciprocate, whether it would be convenient for you to have the Tsais with you for part of the Christmas holidays and whether, indeed, you would prefer to have or not to have them at all. Please be perfectly frank, for I have no desire whatever to suggest even a plan that would not meet with your fullest approval.

I am inclined to think that the time has come when I ought to surrender in a way my form of guardianship of Hellen to one of her own sex who understands her needs and can guide her judiciously than it is possible for me to do. I can make the attempt, at least, where boys are concerned, but I must confess and frankly that the problem of girls which confront me in my guise of guardian are a bit out of my sphere. I don't think it is quite fair to Helen, either, that she should not have the direct oversight and guidance of some motherly person who can help her with her individual problems.

After thinking along the above lines for many months, I am wondering whether you would feel willing to assume this responsibility? I am sure that the arrangement would be fully approved by Mr. Tsai, Sr., and I should be ready and glad to cooperate in every possible way. I am sure that Mr. Tsai would wish to reimburse you for any expense or trouble to which you were put through the relationship. May I ask you, therefore, to be frank with me in stating whether such a plan would meet with your full approval? If it does not, I shall, of course, understand perfectly your position and will turn elsewhere for possible help.

With kind personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs.Nye:

Thank you so much for your letter of November 22 which has just reached me. Doubtless you will have received by this time the letter which I wrote you yesterday and in which I explained the plans and the reasons for the same finally adopted for the Thanksgiving recess by Helen Tsai and her brother.

I am sure that these children, for they are hardly more than than yet, will be only too glad to visit you in the not distant future, and I presume that there may be a good opportunity for this, provided your own plans permit, during the coming Christmas holidays. The plans for that period are still unsettled, though I understand that the Chinese Minister in Washington and his wife desire to have the Tsais with them for part, at least, of that time.
I am very sorry to have missed your recent call and shall hope for better luck the next time you may happen to be in this vicinity.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mrs. Nye:

Thank you for your good letter received this morning.

I have not yet heard definitely from the Tsai children as to their vacation plans, though, when I last saw them, they were both hoping that they would receive an invitation to pass at least part of their Christmas holiday season with the Chinese Minister and his wife in Washington. If the children themselves do not advise you of their plans, I shall be glad to do so a bit later when I became more familiar with them.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mrs. Nye

I have your letter of February 1st.

Either Helen handed me or you sent me statements from Filene’s showing expenditures made by you in Helen’s behalf during the holidays. While the statements were made out in your name, I understood that I was to settle, and did so at the time. I enclose the receipts which seem to cover the articles listed on this latest account of yours as well as two additional ones not so listed. If I have misjudged the situation, please do not hesitate to let me know. Kindly return the receipts also, as I keep a complete file of these in the expectation of sending them later to China.

As for the dentistry, I am sure that it ought to be attended to, but I am sorry that it could not have been done sooner. I wonder if it is net delaying matters a bit too long to wait until the summer for this work. Indeed I am not sure what the children are going to do this summer, though Helen told me only yesterday that she wished to continue her regular study, a course which practically all of my Chinese ward have followed in recent years. I had thought something of seeding her to the Sea Pines Sumer School down on the Cape, but I suppose in any case there would be two or three weeks in the early and late summer when both of the children would be more or less free lances.

Very sincerely yours,
