Only yesterday I had a long letter from Luk, one of our old boys who has been back in China as an engineer for several years. He keeps in touch with me; and I can’t tell you how much I value his letters, and the news they give me of Luk’s doings. Hsieh has been very good in keeping us posted about his work at Wisconsin. Yes, it certainly does look as if China were swinging back into a monarchy; but I agree with you that a constitutional monarchy is much better than a democracy which is a democracy only in name. From my own knowledge of China and Chinese affairs, as well as the opinion so often expressed to me by the maturer men of my acquaintance in China, I cannot help feeling that the proposal step will not prove to be a backward step after all. As you say, the moment China is ready for a republic, and really desires it, noting can prevent her from having it.
