<text>My dear Tommy:

Thank you for your latter received this morning, with inclosed bills and check for $432.50. By the way, if you have occasion in future to send me similar checks, please write on the back before you sign your name, "Pay to the order of Alfred E. Stearns.” This makes the check of no value to anyone but myself until I in turn have indorsed it. In the form in which you sent it to me it was equally as good as cash, and had your letter gone astray or been appropriated by anyone else on the way here, you might easily have been out the full amount.
Of course you know best about the matter of board, but I am afraid your father will be distressed when he learns how much you are paying. Further, I don’t believe that board at the college dining hall would begin to cost so much. I know Dean Jones is connected with academic, but I recommended him to you not so much as an official of the institution, but a good friend who I know would be willing and glad to aid you in every possible way. Even if you don’t go to him in this matter, look him up at an early date and make his acquaintance, it will be well worth your while to do so, and I know that he will welcome the opportunity.
I certainly hope you are going to come through these final examinations with flying colors. Let me know how you come out, and also keep me posted as to where you will be during the holidays.

With all good wishes to you, believe me,

Sincerely yours,</text>
