Your son's case has interested me deeply, but I felt for some time unable to know how to act intelligently. I did not wish to encourage the boy to pursue a course apparently at variance with Dr. Tenney's wishes, consequently I communicated with my friend, Sir Chentung Liang Cheng, the Chinese minister to this country advised me that I was probably right in refusing the boy permission to enter here until I had received instructions from you. Some weeks ago I received your cabled message, and on the same day a note from Dr. Tenney advising me that he, too, had heard from you, and that the boy was to be allowed to enter Phillips Academy. He entered at once, and has since been hard at work with us I trust that his record hero may prove in every way satisfactory to you. The Chinese boys who are with us at this time, as well as those who have been here in recent years, have proved an unusually fine, scholarly group of boys.
