I believe he is capable of doing better work than he is now producing, but his chief interest is apparently not in his studies but in athletics. I think possibly a letter from you to this young man might help considerably. He is taking only four subjects with us, namely: English III, Algebra II, French I, and Ancient History. If he is college material, he should be doing "B" work in all of them. I am not surprised that the boy is not making pronounced progress with you, and indeed I am more than a little surprised that he has done as well as your letter would seem to indicate. Frankly, I have been trying to persuade Tu and his father also for several years that the money invested in the boy’s education in this country is being practically thrown away. He tried to do something for Tu here at Phillips Academy and gave it up as a bad job. At the boy's earnest request, I allowed him to try the local high school, but the authorities there throw up their hands in despair after they had worked with him for some time, and he was consequently forced to sever that connection. I strongly urged his father to take him home, but the boy himself looks on this possibility as having in it the elements of a real calamity and has been able to persuade his father to allow him to stay In this country and try other schools. Personally, I can’t believe that the boy will ever prove himself to be college material. For one thing, he is already too old to plan an investment of additional time that a college education would require. For two or three years now I have been trying persuade this boy to return to China, as I have been clearly convinced that he has been only wasting his time and his father’s money by remaining in this country. Up till recently, it has been impossible for me to secure the father’s approval of my recommendation. Several months ago, however, he wrote me saying that he had accepted my judgement and asking me to instruct his boy to return to China at an early date. I passed on the instructions, only to receive the usual remonstrances. Then I wrote Tu to come out and see me, but he has not come. Next, I wrote him that I would him no more money for his expenses in this country until I had had at least a chance to talk with him and convince that he must promptly acquiesce in his father’s decision and make his plans to return to China. I have not seen him since, though my secretary tells me that this morning he telephoned the office, asking for his May allowances, which I have not sent his, adding that he was coming out this coming Saturday morning to talk with me. Needless to say, I shall hold the allowance until his comes, and probably longer, though I do not wish him to leave the country, of course, until he has settled all legitimate bills. From the above you will understand how thoroughly I appreciate your letter. Tu. I note that Tu’s record this time is a bit better than any he has previously turned in, but even so I agree heartily with you that the boy is not college material. He is altogether too old and evidently he lacks the natural ability to handle college work successfully. Mr. Tu’s father wrote me a short time ago that he was unwilling to advance further funds for his boy’s education in America. I reported this to Kong, who accepted the verdict rather sulkily as I had anticipated. Kong assured me that he was then trying to secure admission to the Ford school in Detroit, whatever that may be. Later, and only a week or two ago, I received another letter from the father saying that he would be willing to have Kong remain in this country if he could secure work in a Ford factory, and only on that condition. This information also I have passed on to the boy who tells me that he is trying to secure such a position, but that his efforts thus far have not met with success. This is where matters stand at the moment, but I am perfectly clear that Tu should not go on with his work with you or in any similar school.
