Dr. Alfred Stearns, Principal,
Phillips Andover Academy,
Andover, Mass.

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I owe you an apology for not having written you after telephoning you last Saturday. The fact is that I have had so much on my mind since my arrival last Friday that the omission remained quite unnoticed until the present time.

Did I not think that the matter which we wished to bring to your attention would prove of interest to you, I would not trouble you to come in. It is with reference to some writing, which we think possibly you may be in position to do for us and which would be mutually profitable. It is not a matter that can be gone into at any length in a letter, and therefore I will defer its discussion, hoping to have the pleasure of meeting you at our Office at an early date.

I note with pleasure the important gathering of Chinese students at Andover, as you know of my interest in the Chinese and the Chinese question.

I may say I am in regular correspondence with members of the King family in China and anticipate a visit to that country in the not distant future.

Thanking you in advance for the favor of a call, I remain with kind regards,

Very truly yours,

My dear Mr. Robinson

Your very kind letter of the 6th inst. has been received and vary deeply appreciated. I assure you after reading the letter I feel an even keener regret at the necessity of giving up the undertaking. I assure you, however, that J would be glad to feel that I could consistantly pursue any other course, but this seems impossible. Any service which I might in other ways be able to render at any time will be gladly contributed, and I certainly hope that you will find just the right man for the special work in hand.

With best wishes for the New Year, believe me.

My dear Mr. Robinson:

Allow me to thank you for giving me the opportunity to render you such slight assistance as you have suggested in connection with your coming trip to China. By all means call on Sir Liang, and if you lay stress on your Andover connections I am sure you will find the ice already broken for you, if any one exists. I enclose a letter which I hope will answer your purpose.

In case you do go to China it is needless for me to express the hope that you will convey my respects and good wishes to the late Minister, whom I can assure you you will find a most generous host and a royal good fellow.

Sincerely yours.

My dear Sir Liang:

This letter will introduce to you Mr. B.Atwood Robinson of Boston, a personal friend of mine, a good friend, too of Phillips Academy, and a benefactor of several your countrymen who have been in America. Mr. Robinson represents the Sub-Target Gum Company and is visiting China in the interests of his firm.

At the time that arrival of your countrymen underwent a most unpleasant and unjust treatment at the hands of some of our petty officials in Boston, Mr. Robinson was indefatigable in his efforts to help these boys out of their difficulties and to bring about the administration of proper and decent justice. It was through no fault of his that the results were not more satisfactory, and on one felt more keenly than did he the injustice and unfairness of it all. Mr. Robinson is associated in business with Mr. Stratton, a warm personal friend of mine and one of the best friends Phillips Academy has ever had. Mr. Stratton for many years had charge of our musical clubs in the school and was greatly beloved by the boys. He is at present representing the Sub-Target Gum Company in London, England.

Any courtesies you feel disposed to extend to Mr. Robinson will be very deeply appreciated by him and by me, and I feel confident that you will be glad to make his acquaintance and will find him well worth knowing.

With kind personal regards, as always, believe me.

Very sincerely yours.

Andover .Mass.,

My Dear Dr. Stearns: - On returning after an absence of a few days, I find your letter of the 24th, enclosing letter of introduction to Sir Chentung Liang Cheng, and I wish to thank you for it and for the way in which you have done it.

I am afraid that my opportunities for showing my friendship for Phillips Academy have been rather meagre, but my all too slight acquaintance with you, and my more intimate association with Mr. Stratton have led me to feel a particular interest in the old institution .and I hope with the increasing prosperity of Sub-Target to have the privilege someday of substantially showing my interest therein.

With assurances of my personal regard .believe me,

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Dr. Stearns

I note by the paper this morning that Dr. Charles D. Tenney is about to return to China as Secretary of the American Ministry at Pekin. I presume that you are well acquainted with Dr. Tenney, and if so, will you, if it is not asking too much, send me a letter which will assist me in making his acquaintance, which, I feel, will be of decided advantage to me when I go.

Please excuse me for again bothering you, and accept in advance my thanks for any action you may take in the matter.
With kind regards,

Very sincerely yours
