Dr Alfred E. Stearns,
Philips Academy,
Andover, Massachusetts,
U. S. A.

My dear Dr. Stearns,

I have your cable as follows:
" DONT WORRY MARYS MESSAGE AWAIT MY LETTER " and on receipt of your long letter of explanation on March 19th I replied as follows

" GRATEFUL LETTER DETAILS GIVING CONCENSUS OPINION CLEMONS, BAILEY, ARTHUR REGARDING MARYS COLLEGE QUALIFICATIONS. I NOW EMPHASIZE COLLEGE LESS, MAY I SUGGEST MARY RETURN ABBOT FOR DIPLOMA. ROBINSON WILL DISCUSS FUTURE PLANS PERSONALLY "

I trust this cable to you made clear my reaction to the situation concerning Mary.

I am very sorry for any worry and distress this matter must have caused you and I want you to know that I appreciate very much every thing which you have done. I can fully appreciate the difficulties under which you were labouring, we are both working at long distance, - and I would answer you that my cable implies no criticism of anything which you had done previously. It only seemed to me considering the opinions expressed by Misses Clemons, Bailey & Arthur that Mary may not have qualifications fitting her for college work that at least Mary had better finish up at Abbot and have this one item out of the way. Then we can talk the future.

As to that future, I had thought of the possibility of getting to the States this Summer but that is quite out of question. Fortunately Mr & Mrs Robinson are going home on furlough and he will be able to take up with you, the question of Mary’s future, of course I am ignorant of every thing in the States, never having there, and you will have to overlook this disability on my part but I have talked things over very thoroughly with Mr Robinson and am empowering him to act fully on my behalf and shall abide by whatever decisions he reaches after consultation with you.

I want to thank you again most heartily for all the painstaking thought & care you have given to all the matters.

Thank you for the clipping from the paper giving Quincy Sheh’s picture as Odist at Bowdoin. We all feeling very proud of the boy and thanks for your training that he had received from you.

I should say a word as to why my answer has been delayed so long. For one thing Mr Robinson had been in Hospital which made it difficult for me to consult with him, and in the second place we have been up set in Tientsin by the recent military disturbances that it had been most difficult for one to concentrate one’s mind on the normal affairs of life however important.

With kindest regards
Yours very cordially

Enclosure:-
One copy of letter dated 21st April to Mr A. G. Robinson.

P. S. :
Your letter of March 19th has just came in, I think I need add nothing more than I have already said regarding Mary’s plans etc.
In reference to Tommy I am quite in agreement with what you say. If he should continue to wish to take a course of training fitting him for business I should desire him to go to Wharton but I would advise that he go to college as you suggest, and then go to Wharton. He will be much better prepared for real usefulness and leadership if he has back of him the four years of intellectual training which college should give him. I agree to Amherst as you suggest where Charlie will be able to keep an eye on him.</text>

                <text>SHANGHAI ,12th.May,1926

My dear Dr.Stearns,

I received your letter of April second as I was about to leave Tientsin for Shanghai. I also received, at the same time,a letter from Dr.Sze enclosing copies of his letters to you of date Easter Sunday and April 5. I had hardly been in Shanghai a day or two when I received a cable-message from Dr.Sze informing me that Mary’s affairs had been settled and that she is apparently satisfied and happy. I at once cabled to Washington as follows-"SZE STEARNS SINOLEGATE WASHINGTON THANKS FOR SATISFACTORY ARRANGEMENT HAVE INSTRUCTED ROBINSON ACCORDINGLY SUN”. Dr.Sze would send this message on to you. Mr.Robinson was just about arriving in America when I received Dr.Sze’s cable, so I cabled Mr.Robinson to await a letter from me before seeing you. Mr.Robinson was,of course,in ignorance of the arrangement come to by the wise counsel of you & Dr.Sze. I have accordingly written Mr. Robinson by this mail and a copy of this letter is sent you herewith.

I appreciate beyond any poor feeble words I can put down in paper the wonderful spirit and the care and thought you have put into the handling of Mary’s case. I am very sorry to have put you to all the trouble of visiting Washington. Dr.& Madam Sze having Mary and Charlie with them on a visit helped to consolidate the wise arrangement made. I wish to assure you of my entire approval of what you have done for my children, and I want to express my sincere regret for whatever trouble my second cable caused you. The only reason I can offer for my action was my thought that Mary may not at all be able to qualify for college and the ambitious parents desired to get what she might be able to get. However I am glad that you L Dr. Sze rightly took my cable as a suggestion and worked out the satisfactory arrangement for which I thank you again.

There seems only one thing more to arrange for, and that is some way ahead. I mean the fixing-up affairs at New York for Mary when she enters Elmira. If Mary is to stay with a private family I would like her to be in a Christian home with people who would like to have a Chinese girl with them.

Again thanking you for all you are doing and assuring you how much I appreciate it all.
I remain,

Very cordially yours,
C.Y.Sun

SHANGHAI. 12th May 1926
Mr. Arthur G. Robinson c/o Mr.A.D.Rider, 2524 Forest /venae, Kansas City, U.S.A.

My dear Robbie,

After you left Tientsin I received letters from Dr.Stearns (2 April) and Dr.Sze(5 April) with copies from Dr.Sze of 2 letters written by him to Dr.Stearns. Then, a day or two after arriving in Shanghai I had a cable-message from Dr.Sze which was delayed somewhat owing to it having come to Tientsin and then to me by steamer here.	I enclose copies of all these communications and, after you have read them all, you will understand my cable to you on board your steamer. The Dollar Co. assured me it would reach you at Seattle. I enclose a copy of this cable, also a copy of a cable I sent off at the same time to Dr.Sze & Dr.Stearns.

The satisfactory arrangement for Mary made by the kindness of Dr.Stearns & Dr.Sze meet with my entire approval, and it is nice to have the message from Dr.Sze informing me that Mary is apparently satisfied and happy with the arrangement, which I am sure you will find full and complete by the time you see Dr.Stearns at Andover.

You remember we spoke together of the possibility of Mary taking up music? You might talk this over with Dr.Stearns. Has Mary the music-sense? Does she fancy taking up music and working at it? I am reminded here that Dr.Stearns quotes Mrs.Russell the principal of "Whittiers and advises that in Mary’s college work she should "Take the broader courses in College", and I wonder if music would come under this head.

So now, Robbie, most if not all of the difficulties you were good enough to plan to help me with have been done away with through the very kind efforts of Dr.Stearns with the help and backing of Dr.Sze. But if there is any way in which you can help Dr.Stearns in points that may come up as you talk things over I shall appreciate such help. I do not know how to find words to thank Dr.Stearns for all he has done and is doing for the children. Please thank him in person for me.

You might talk over with Dr.Stearns the New York arrangements for Mary. If she is to stay with a private family, you know how my heart is set upon having Mary with a Christian family who would welcome a Chinese girl to their home.

Accept my sincere thanks for all your interest and help. For you and your family I wish the best of times at your own home and in all your stay in America.

Yours sincerely,
SGD C.Y.Sun

                <text>Dear Mr. Stearns:

It is my pleasure to write you regarding the coming to Andover of five Chinese students from Tientsin, China. They are boys whom I have known for four years and whose fathers I have known very well nearly as long. They come from very fine Chinese homes and I am very eager on account of my relationship with their fathers, especially as well as on account of my interest in the boys, to see that they have the happiest sort of introduction to our American school life.

From two of the boys’ father I had a letter about their coming, which I shall be glad to show you. Originally he had left the matter of their education partly in my hands, but made an unexpectedly sudden decision to send the boys this year, and I do not know what led him to choose Andover. Last April I left Tientsin where I have been in Young Men’s Christian Association work for the last five years, and was not prepared for their coming so soon. It is good to know that they are going to such a splendid academy as yours.

My home used to be in Waterville, Maine, and you can imagine how proud I am to have them come to New England and to such a fine old school as Andover. I should be very glad indeed if you would write me as to what you have heard regarding their coming, and want to help to get them situated there with you. You can hardly understand, I believe, how much these personal relationships mean to the people in the Orient, especially in China. My relations with these boys' fathers have been particularly intimate and close. I feel I must do everything in my power to help them and I hope you will pardon anything that seems like an intrusion on my part.

Mr. Sun wrote me that the boys were all to be placed in fine Christian homes. He and I had many talks about this matter of the boys’ life in this country and I hope that his idea has been carried out with regard to their living there at Andover. If I go with them from here I believe I shall be able to give some assistance in Andover to such homes as may be opened to them or in helping you to understand some adjustments that may be necessary.

Hoping that you will understand my interest and the motives that prompt my seeming intrusion into affairs that you perhaps would first think out of my province. </text>

                <text>Dear Doctor Stearns:

Since seeing you I have had one or two visits with Arthur Sun and have made several inquiries regarding a suitable home for Mary when she goes to Elmira. My sister has friends there and I met some ladies at the shore this summer who are going to make inquiries for me on their return to Syracuse. Within a few days now I hope to get up there and run over to Elmira to definitely select this home for Mary, provided the verbal understanding we had in June still holds good.

I believe you were very willing to entrust to me the matter of the selection. As my mother and sister are living at Cortland, New York, not far from Elmira, this will be fairly easy for me to arrange. I should like, however, such information from you as would help in finding the most congenial and helpful place for Mary. You probably know, too, by this time how she has come on with her summer’s work and just when she will need to go to Elmira for such entrance preliminaries as may be necessary. An early reply from you in regard to these matters will be much appreciated.

During my brief visit in Boston, besides having a good chat with Arthur, I also got a glimpse of Charlie. He certainly fulfilled the expectations I had for him after conversation with you. Frank Lin also impressed me as doing very well. Quincy Sheh I saw at the station in Brunswick as we went through. He seemed to be in good health and quite his usual complacent self. I am sorry to have missed seeing Mary and Tom. The latter, I presume, will proceed to Middlebury as you arranged.

In my chat with Arthur, I got the idea that he felt somewhat handicapped in his relations with his sister Mary. He seemed to want very much to have opportunity for freer conversation. I do not know what limitations Miss Clemons felt were best with regard to Mary, so I am not in a position to make any suggestion other than to give you a tip that he would appreciate a freer opportunity for chats with his sister. You will not misunderstand I hope my "butting in" with a suggestion of this sort.

I understand from Mr. Sun that Mary’s allowance is approximately $2,000 per year. I presume in making arrangements for her home expense in Elmira that I could depend on this as a maximum, deducting, of course, necessary college and other personal expense. I should appreciate suggestions from you as to what would be reasonable to allow for such accommodations as you think she ought to have. Very likely you have budgeted her allowance and might give me some of those items.

This letter will probably reach you in your busiest season and I hesitate to ask for an immediate reply. However, the earlier I hear from you the easier it would be to plan my trip to Elmira.

Sincerely

AGR:GEW

It was very good to get your letter of September 6th confirming my understanding of the arrangements regarding Mary Sun. Anticipating this I went up to Elmira on Tuesday of this week and had a most successful visit there with people who might be interested in her case. I had preceded my arrival with letters to the general Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. there so that he could at once refer me to families that might make a home for Mary.

This trip to Elmira had to be taken on that particular day due to other engagements here in New York. I had hoped to have a letter to you prior to my going, but in the absence of your letter I took a chance on making tentative arrangements there. Everything now has worked out as well as we could hope and I shall at once write to Mrs. Eli Pitman, asking her for an estimate of charges for board, etc., which I shall send to you as soon as I hear from her.

Just a word about this Pitman family. Dr. Eli Pitman is a District Superintendent of the Methodist Church. The Pitmans formerly lived in Elmira. At that time he was Pastor of a local church. They came back to Elmira after some years of absence to make their home there and work out from there into the district for which he is responsible. Mrs. Pitman is the mother of six children, three of them grown daughters. One is a missionary to China, the other two will be living in Elmira this year. The youngest with her husband will be there in the home so that at times when Mrs. Pitman will be away her daughter will be in charge of the household. The Pitmans are of English extraction which seemed to me to provide a broader attitude with regard to the Chinese. Their daughter being a missionary to China also gives them a sympathetic attitude and altogether the home environment and Mrs. Pitman’s personality would give Mary a much better place than I had hope to find. At this time perhaps I do not need to say more about the Pitmans. Upon hearing from Mrs. Pitman as to the matter of expenses, I shall write you and then you and Mary can work out a budget that will meet the case.

Just now I ought to know as soon as possible what further steps I ought to arrange for in getting Mary settled at Elmira. I am wondering if one of her brothers will come on with her and go up there, or whether I ought to meet her here in New York and accompany her to Elmira. I have to leave the East for St. Louis not later than the nineteenth and have certain dates in Pennsylvania to arrange for before then. My sister, who lives in Portland about sixty miles from Elmira, has not begun her Fall work yet, and I have been thinking that she might help to meet Mary and get her settled. If Arthur or Charlie could come on, I suppose that would be best of all. I have written Arthur but have heard nothing from him. I understand that Elmira College opens September 21st.

Thank you for your very full comment on Arthur’s attitude. At some later time I hope we can talk things over at some length.

Cordially yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mr. Robinson:

I have been trying to find time to consider Mary's problem and answer properly your letter of September 11, but these opening days are hectic ones, with the office crowded every minute, and committee meetings, the last one terminating at midnight last night, more than fill the evening hours.

I am trying to get hold of Charlie Sun and have wired him to call me on the phone so that I can discuss Mary's plans with him. I have also asked Mary to wire me the exact day on which she intended to leave for Elmira. If Charlie can accompany her, I shall be glad to have him go, though I am perfectly sure that Mary is capable of managing the journey alone and will even be inclined to resent a bit the suggestion that she needs a chaperone for the trip. If I can't get hold of Charlie or Arthur, therefore, I shall be disposed to let her go to Elmira alone, for she can doubtless go right through from Springfield with very little, if any changing of trains.

I am enclosing a letter just received from Mary, so that you can see how she feels about the plans made for her. My feeling is that your plan is the wiser one for freshman year, at least, and I am writing Mary to this effect today. Mary enjoys immensely companionship with large groups of girls, but I am not sure that her work benefits from the contacts, though, on the whole, I don't think that she is inclined to abuse them. Anyway, the arrangements you have suggested with the Pitman family seem to me very attractive. I do hope I am going to have a chance to see you for something more than a brief and hurried visit before very long. Please let me know when you are likely to be in this vicinity again.

Very sincerely yours,
