I have felt for a long while that the boy would not profit greatly by a longer stay in America since he apparently is not particularly apt with his studies, though I have no doubt that he would do well on a regular job, especially of the type you have in mind. It has always been my impression that the general education such as he sought in the United States was a bit too long delayed in his case, and that he undertook it at an age when every boy’s ability to absorb and profit by book learning, as we sometimes call it, has become distinctly less active and efficient. If he had started a few years earlier, I am not at all sure that he might not have done well. I can only hope, though, that the American experience will prove to have been of real value to him and that the time and expense involved will not seem to either you or him have been wasted. I feel certain that with the growing of age my son will find it not profitable to remain longer in the United States unless he can find an opportunity to learn mechanics in such factory as Ford’s. I am going to write to him a letter persuading him to return to China next June to accept an appointment as I have previously mentioned.
