I really don’t know what I ought to do, for not for the world would I leave Kong stranded in a position that would mean real disaster to him. At the same time, he has so utterly ignored the instructions of both you and me that I feel that something definite and rigid has to be done if the boy is not to go on drifting hopelessly and indefinitely. Further, he has absolutely ignored me now for months and not even hinted that he was not carrying out the instructions which you earlier sent him through me and which at the time he agreed to obey. I find that he is back once more attempting school work with boys years below his age with no definite goal that I can see in view. It seems to me most deplorable. Under the circumstances I have felt that it is only fair to you that you should know exactly how I view the situation, and hence I am sending you herewith a copy of the letter I here just written him. I still have on hand funds which you have sent me sufficient to carry the boy for several months. The school bill which he has just sent me calls for 160.00 and the allowances for which he has asked would probably consume a good part of the funds on hand. I have not felt Justified in paying this bill and for the reasons given in my letter; If you authorise me to do so, I shall of course comply promptly with your instructions, for I have only one desire and that is to carry out your expressed wishes and thereby to do what seems to you best for the boy himself. I should be disposed to be more lenient if Kong himself had not practically ignored me for the past two or three years except on those occasions when he desired money. I have pleaded with him again and again and have appealed to his loyalty and the responsibility he owes to you, and apparently in vain. In the letter I have just received from the boy, he tells me that a friend of his. Mr. William Moy, has written you pleading in his behalf and that I will doubtless receive some instructions from you to pay his bills and approval from you as to the plans he has adopted. Of course the moment any such instructions are received, I shall act promptly upon them whatever feelings I may have as to the wisdom of such a course, but I do feel that I must have your endorsement to follow before taking such an important step, especially in view of the instructions received from you at an earlier date. May I suggest that if it is your desire that Kong be given this further opportunity to pursue elementary studies, a cable message to this effect be sent me, for I have no doubt that the boy must be living at present on his friends and I am especially anxious to take no position or to do anything that will involve farther embarrassment, financially or otherwise, to you. I had not learned that Mr. Tu had gone back to the Huntingdon school, and your letter brings me the first intimation of this. The fact is that Tu practically never takes me into his confidence unless he is in trouble, and that is one of the chief reasons why I can’t extend to him the confidence and trust that I should like to and that I am regularly able to extend without reservation to my Chinese wards. My last instructions from Tu’s father wore to the effect that if his son was to remain in this country, it was to be on the understanding that he was give up his high school studies, for which he is already far too old and secure a position in some factory like the Ford factory, suggested by the boy himself,- in order to prepare himself for a worth while position in China. I myself felt strongly that Tu had been wasting his time and his father’s money by staying on at a school like Huntington with boys years his junior, and though it was my belief that he ought to return to hie home, I consented to the father1 a suggestion that he be allowed to remain a bit longer if - and only if - he took such a position as I have mentioned above. Tu promised me that he would make every effort to secure such a position and that is the last word I have had from him. Under the circumstance, I am sure you will appreciate that I have a more heavy responsibility to the father than to the boy at this moment, and that I do not, therefore, feel justified in misusing further the father's money in order that Tu may continue work which both his father and I agree is not suited to him at his resent age and with his clear look of intellectual interest. E. Stearns: Permit me to introduce myself to you as a friend of Mr. K.Y.Tu. Having been with Mr. Tu for more than five years, I believe I know him quite well and quite intimately. Probably you have learned that he has gone back to Huntington School this year. Judging from his recent attitude I know he is determined to finish the high school work in as short a period as possible. It is true that he has not made good scholastic records in the past years in this country; but this was due to his deep interest in practically all kinds of athletics and big circle of friends. He has been associated with people of high moral standing, and I can vouch for his exemplary character and conduct. Mr. William Moy of Stone & Webster Co. has written to Mr. Tu’s father, giving his opinion of K. Y. and strongly recommening him for his father’s support at least through high school. I can reasonably believe that Tu’s father will accept Mr. Moy’s recommendation and continue to support him. However, at present K. Y. is trying in every possible way to get $100.00 to pay off part of his tuition; he is unsuccessful in that because all of his friends are students who have only limited means. Consequently, I recommend him for your consideration, knowing that you have been K. Y.' s guardian and seeing that there is no other way whereby his friends can help him out. Tu. I note that Tu’s record this time is a bit better than any he has previously turned in, but even so I agree heartily with you that the boy is not college material. He is altogether too old and evidently he lacks the natural ability to handle college work successfully. Mr. Tu’s father wrote me a short time ago that he was unwilling to advance further funds for his boy’s education in America. I reported this to Kong, who accepted the verdict rather sulkily as I had anticipated. Kong assured me that he was then trying to secure admission to the Ford school in Detroit, whatever that may be. Later, and only a week or two ago, I received another letter from the father saying that he would be willing to have Kong remain in this country if he could secure work in a Ford factory, and only on that condition. This information also I have passed on to the boy who tells me that he is trying to secure such a position, but that his efforts thus far have not met with success. This is where matters stand at the moment, but I am perfectly clear that Tu should not go on with his work with you or in any similar school. Indeed, I must carry out the father’s instructions in this respect. Just what success the boy will have in finding work of the character he desires, I am not at all sure. Very sincerely yours. C.H.
