This morning into receipt of a report from Long's department head, forwarded to me by the vice-president of the institution, and am taking the liberty of enclosing this report herewith so that you may note for yourself exactly how matters stand at this time. Several weeks ago I was inclined to be distinctly pessimistic in regard to the outcome of Long's work at Burdett. Apparently things have changed a bit for the better, and I can only hope that the change will prove to have been permanent and that the improvement already noted will become more pronounced during the balance of the year. May I quite a comment or two made by Vice-President Wells in sending me this report: “We are somewhat encouraged. The method devised seems to have brought some result. Mr. Tu has worked in accordance with the regulations devised, and though he found it difficult at first, he adapted himself quite readily as time went on.” “I have discussed this report with Mr. Tu and have told him that it is being forwarded to you. It is my belief that he is somewhat impressed by his own progress, and if the system is continued, there is likelihood that it might bring the result which is desired. Y. TU First month’s report under special program. ATTITUDE. Mr. Tu seems to have made a real attempt to cooperate with his teachers. His general conduct has shown material improvement. APPLICATION. The program laid out a month ago has been followed. It has been rather difficult at times for him to rid himself of his old tendency to do nothing, but he has, during the month, put in a creditable amount of hard work. RESULTS. Arithmetic: His home work under Mr. Pulsifer’s supervision has been of passable grade, dur probably to Mr. Pulsifer’s refusal to allow him to give up until he had gotten the right answers to the problems upon which he was at work. His work in the classroom for the month of January averaged only about 40$ in point of accuracy. However, for the first week in February his home work, from standpoint of accuracy, averaged 80$, and his work in the classroom, 60$ — quite a marked advance over what he had previously attained. Business Practice: His books covering work performed in the last six weeks have been handed in for examination. Mr. Seavey reports them to be in very poor condition. Much work is still necessary to bring them into shape for approval. Accounting: Part II. It came to our attention at the end of January that his work as presented was in such poor condition that it could not be accepted for credit, neither could Mr. Tu pass the test given upon the work covered. He is now repeating this work with Miss McGuiggan, and I have required him to report to her each morning in order that she might check his completion of the previous day’s home work. This he has done regularly, and but for his absence of one day his work for the week would be complete. He has promised to make up this day’s work before he leaves tonight. Miss McGuiggan says the work in Accounting being handed in is acceptable, and she feels that he will make the grade so far as Part II Accounting is concerned. Spelling: For the month of January his grade in Spelling is "A” — rather remarkable, for it is the first time that he has made an effort to secure any grade at all in this subject. Penmanship: His work in this subject is so far in advance of his progress in the other work that we shall take him out of the penmanship class for a time, permitting him to devote these periods to Business Practice or Office Appliance, whichever may seem to be best. As Kong’s account has been a bit over-drawn, I am glad to have the remittance at this time, though I should have been perfectly willing to handle the matter from this end if you had so desired, especially in view of the tremendous obstacles you face in the matter of exchange in these unusual days. I am enclosing a statement of the account to date, and I am asking Kong to be especially careful in the m atter of his expenditures, though I have no reason to think that he has not been so up to this time. I wish I felt equally clear that the money you have been investing so generously in the boy’s education had been altogether well spent. I think we can feel a bit encouraged. Mr. Tu has stuck to the job, but it requires constant pressure. This week he has asked that we alter our schedule somewhat. It appears that he feels he needs an hour in the afternoon for relaxation. He has further promised that if we will excuse him for the hour in which he has been doing his arithmetic home work, he will faithfully devote an evening hour to that subject. We have taken him at his word and will put him on trial for one week to see whether or not we can make the change in the requirements without sacrificing anything in the way of accomplishment If we can hold him to the program, I feel that something can be accomplished in his behalf.
