While I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy at the camp I am sure that you will appreciate the fact that it is of course impossible for me to make other arrangements for you at this late date. Further I know of no better arrangements for you at that could have been made for you even earlier, unless possibly at Long Lake Lodge where you would have been required to work hard all summer on your studies. I have asked Mr. Sanborn to see that you do some steady and needed study at your present camp for your Andover examinations were terribly disappointing and indicate clearly that it is a serious question whether without a good deal of further study you could hold your place at Andover even in our first and lowest class. On the basis of the Andover exams you have very little to show for your two years at Mt. Vernon and it is time that you realized that you are no longer a child with play and a good time your chief interest in life. Frankly, I should be inclined to regard your appeal to be near Helen with more seriousness if you had shown, when you were with her, a greater brotherly interest. You will not have forgotten, I am sure, how constantly you left her alone in Andover while you went to the movies or did other things that happened to please you. Helen was the lonely and homesick one then, but my repeated requests to you to consider her interests and do more to entertain and make her happy brought little if any response. Your plain duty now is to buckle down to some hard and conscientious work and prepare yourself as best you can to meet the Andover requirements in the fall. Otherwise we shall have to give up the Andover plan altogether and seek another small school that has a reputation for hard work and exacting discipline. If we have to do this it will be an admission to the world that you were either unable or unwilling to meet the standards of Phillips Academy; and that would be little less than disgrace and a cause for real pain to your father. Unless I hear that you are ready to accept my instructions and get down to hard and serious work at your present camp I shall feel it necessary to send a copy of this letter to your father in order that he may understand the whole situation and the real nature of the problem. Many friends of mine who have had intimate relations with St. Mary’s have unanimously urged me to place the girl with you. My only hesitancy has been the distance involved and the possible difficulty of transfers through New York, etc., on vacation trips. I am assured, however, that these are all taken care of most efficiently by the school authorities and that I need therefore give no further thought to that particular factor. She is ambitious, unselfish, abounding in in life, vigor, and humor, and exceptionally adaptable. Wherever she goes, she invariably makes friends and seems equally popular with old and young alike. I can commend her in every way, and largely because of her rather unusual qualities and promise I crave for her more than ever the best school and the best influences that can be found. I realize that it is somewhat late to make application for admission to a school as popular as yours, but I am still hoping that you may be able to find a way to admit this unusual and promising candidate from the other side of the world. Helen and Alfred spent a portion of their Easter holidays here in Andover, and I had a chance to see a good bit of them during that time. Both seemed in the best of health and from their own as well as from the reports from their schools I have reason to believe that they are making steady and satisfactory progress. Alfred really seems to be making up to his responsibilities and more ready than formerly to make good use of the opportunities afforded him. I am very hopeful now that he will be able by next September to undertake our work at Andover with good prospect of carrying it successfully. Naturally, I shall be able to follow him more closely and report to you more intelligently as to his promise and progress than I have been able to do while he has been at school elsewhere. I am immensely interested to know that my old friend Mr. M.T. Liang is planning to be in America at about this time. They spent part of their vacation here in Andover and the balance with Dr. and Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth and seemed happier, if anything, than usual. We had some very pleasant times together and it was a real delight to have them about. I think they have come to feel perfectly at home at my house and that they realize that I am in earnest in wishing them to treat it exactly as they would their own home, though, as they understand, I am not able to make it possible for them to reside with me at present since I am living alone. They come and go freely, however, and that’s just what I most welcome. From a remark which Helen dropped, I was led to fear that that you had never received my letter acknowledging the receipt of and thanking you most heartily for your all too generous gift of the beautiful silk. I wrote you at the time, but my feelings have not cooled, and if the letter failed to reach you, please understand that it was sent, at least, and that in it I endeavored to convey some slight measure of my gratitude, gratitude which could hardly be fully expressed in words. I hope, however, that you will never feel under any obligation whatever to send gifts suggesting repayment for what little I have attempted to do for your children. The fun and satisfaction that I derive from the slight service that I am able to render them and you are payment enough, and more. Don’t worry about Alfred’s early thoughts in connection with the choice of college. There is ample time for that decision to be made and on far better bases than can now be found.
