<text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

My wife and I arrived here on the evening of October 21st from China. Before I left home Mr. C.Y. Sun handed to me the enclosed letter together with a piece of very fine carved white jade. At that time it was my intention to come to England via America. I stayed in China longer than I expected, so I was obliged to give up my visit to your country.

The enclosed sheet of paper shows you the size of the jade, which is a circular piece with a hole in the middle. Shall I ship it to you or wait till you send for it?

Last Saturday I sent you a week-end cable letter reading as follows

"Please ask Charles Sun come as soon possible. Cabling Legation Washington issue him passport. Kindest regards. Sze"

At the same time I cabled to Minister Wu at Washington. I have now received a reply from him con-senting to issue to Charles a diplomatic passport. Not knowing Charles’ address, will you be good enough to instruct him to get in touch with either Minister Wu himself or with Mr. Yung Kwai for the passport. Members of the diplomatic body are generally granted by Transatlantic Steam Ship Companies a discount of 25% on their Steam Ship tickets. Charlie may be able to secure that from the Steam Ship Company by showing his diplomatic passport. Some of the Companies are more exacting who may ask for a letter from the Legation in Washing¬ton. As travelling during this time of the year is not very heavy, if I were Charlie I would only take a ticket at the minimum fare. After getting on board the steamer the purser is generally willing to grant a better cabin without additional payment. My children generally travel at minimum fare rate, minus 25% discount.

I am anxious to have Charlie here as soon as possible. I am impatiently waiting for a reply from you to my cable message of last Saturday.

With the kindest regards,

                <text>My dear Doctor Sze:

Your letter of October 30, enclosing that of Mr. C.Y. Sun dated July 20, has just reached me. On receipt of your letter I cabled you as follows:

"Have instructed Charles Sun arrange passage England earliest possible date"

Please pardon my seeming carelessness in not sending you an earlier message, but I had assumed that Charlie Sun himself would advise you direct of his plans. Only yesterday I received word from Charlie that he was to sail today on the S. S. "Bremen". Doubtless he will have reached you before this letter appears.
I am sure that you will find Charlie Sun as fine a boy as it has ever been your privilege to meet. Of all the Chinese boys with whom I have been thrown in intimate contact for the past thirty years, Charlie, I think, has proved on the whole, as able and satisfactory a lad as any of the group. He has been conscientious and faithful in his work, always dependable, and yet possessing social qualities which have not led him astray into social excesses by any means, but which have rendered him as acceptable companion and friend to those who have had the opportunity to meet him. I feel sure that he will be able to render you at this time a real service and that as the years go by he will exert no little influence for all that is best in his own homeland.

I am naturally very much interested in what you write me of the piece of jade which Mr. C.Y. Sun has so generously consigned to me through your good offices, nothing could be valued more highly by me than a gift of this kind and there is no one from whom more than Mr. Sun it would prompt deeper feelings of appreciation. Under the circumstances, I believe that it will probably be best for you to ship the jade direct to me, if this can be done in safety, for I do not know how soon if at all I could delegate some friend to bring it over in person. If you feel that there is any serious risk involved in shipping it, I shall of course defer to your judgment and try to discover some one during the months ahead who will be coming back to this country and who I can perhaps persuade to secure from you and bring in person to me the article in question.

With warm personal regards, and wishing you every success and happiness in your life and work in England, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

My Father-in-law asked me to own receipt of your kind letter dated Dec. 13th for which he is so highly pleased and grateful. He feels guilty having delayed his reply so long and yet not been able to do so himself in person. Ever since the last operation on his carbuncle which was a very serious one, the size of it was about seven or eight inches in diameter. He has never been able to regain his usual spirit, energy and strength. He therefore feels awfully weak and can not do any work, consequently our doctor orders him not to work at all if possible, so we are keeping back piles and piles of correspondences from him. On top of the above said condition of his health, it was most unfortunate to state that on the 12th evening he had a sudden attack of a very high fever, which rendered him unconscious and delirious for about 24 hours. He is now lying in bed a thoroughly sick man, but happily his mind is gradually getting clearer. We do not know how long he will be recovered to his usual health. He has now authourized [sic] me to answer his correspondence, I therefore take the liberty to do so.

May I through this letter acknowledge receipt of a letter written by your secretary with Charlie, Tommy and Mary’s accounts for which my Father-in-law wishes to express his thanks.

I beg to inform you that my Father-in-law has ordered a telegraphic remittance of G$4,000,00 for account of Mary, Tommy, and Charlie through the London office of the National City Bank of New York, which I hope it has reached you by now.

With very best wishes

Yours very sincerely</text>
