My dear K. T.:

Charlie dropped in on me this morning and gave me the shock of my life, for I had been trying ever since midsummer to figure out whether you two fellows were still alive and if so where on earth, or under heaven, You were looted. It seemed almost as if the earth had opened and swallowed you up. Anyway I am glad to get in touch with you once more and especially happy to know that your physical condition is so much improved. May the gain continue until the old trouble has entirely disappeared.

I have just written a letter in Charlie’s behalf to the Eastman Business College. If anything further is required don't hesitate to let me know. In the meantime I am wondering what to do about the boy’s funds and am disposed, if you agree, to turn over into your hands the money received several weeks ago from your father and amounting to $2.000. Does this proposition meet with your full approval? I am still perfectly willing to act as the boy’s banker if anything can be gained thereby, but if you are to be in the country during the year I imagine that you will be far better able than I to handle the situation to the boy’s best advantage and interest. Please tell me frankly which course I should adopt. I understand from Charlie himself that he already owes you quite a sum above the amount which I sent you last summer, for which, by the way, I have not yet received any acknowledgment. I felt greatly relieved when Charlie told me this morning that the check had reached you, for I feared it might have gone astray.

With the old time good will and best of wishes, believe me

Very sincerely yours

Mr. Tsai Chou Kie,

My dear Tsai:

Let me acknowledge receipt of your letter of August 29th.

The $2,000 referred to was received during the latter part of August, just before I returned from my summer home in northern New Hampshire, and was at once deposited to Kuo Fang's account. I have held it there waiting further instructions from you or from him. or from K.T. Your letter so far is the only intimation I have received as to the disposition to be made of the money in question.

As I think I wrote you some time ago, J turned over to K.T. the balance which I was carrying on K. F’s account, in the belief that K. T. was to handle his brother's affairs during the remainder of the American sojourn unless it was eventually decided to allow K.F. to continue his education in this country. I have heard nothing from either of the boys since midsummer; when they were in the Catskill mountains, but I have no doubt that they will advice me shortly where they are, what their plans are and what disposition therefore shall be made of the funds you have recently placed in my hands. If it is decided that K.F is to remain in the states and continue his education, I shall of course be very glad to continue to act as his guardian so far as conditions permit, although I am afraid I have not been a very helpful or inspiring guardian in this particular case.

With warmest personal regards and kindest remembrances to the various members of your family circle, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>

Dear Sir;

Your letter addressed to "Mr. Alfred Stearn" and "Phillips Exeter Academy", Andover, Mass., has been duly received. Please note that as I am not a New Yorker my name carries an S on the end of it and that the school I represent is Phillips Academy, and not the Phillips Exeter Academy, our sister school located up in New Hampshire.

I am greatly relieved to have the confirmation of the source, of the $2,000 check received by me late in August, for it was my understanding at the time that it came from my old friend Mr. Tsai Shou Kie for the expenses of his son who has been my ward for several years. I am still in the dark about Mr. Kay Tu though a further report from the Western Union at Seattle, Washington, advises me that the boy carries letters of introduction to me from several prominent Chinese officials, including one or two of our old Andover boys. I have no doubt therefore that he is perfectly reliable but that through some miscarriage the check which is father is supposed to have remitted to me has failed to reach its destination. As he should report here within the next few days I shall no doubt be able to check up with film and straighten matters out.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr.Tsai;

Your letter of July 5th reached me a short time ago and I can not refrain from expressing my appreciation for the friendly and generous sentiments you have expressed therein. It has been a privilege and in the main a pleasure, to do what I could for your boys during their American careers and while in K. F.’s case I have been disposed to feel discouraged at times and have reason to believe that I have not fully won the boy’s confidence and good will I am grateful for the opportunity that I have had to serve them and you. Some day I hope that Kuo Fang himself will realize that even though I seemed at the time a bit hard on him I had nothing in view but his best interests. You will realize too I have no doubt that it would have been a much easier and pleasanter thing for me for the time being to do and say the things which pleased him that the fact that I did not would seem pretty clearly to indicate that I care more for his future success than for his present smile. Don’t let me give you the impression that Kuo Fang has been lacking in cooperation and good spirit. Far from it. He has almost always been more than respectful in his general attitude towards me, but I have found it always impossible to curb his financial expenditures and I am confident that he has not always felt happy over the criticisms that I have offered and the recommendations that I have made.

Since your letter arrived I received notice from the bank of the receipt of $2,000 from you to be used, I assume of course, in Kuo Fang’s behalf. As I had understood from K. T. that the boy was to give up the American connection and return home to the near future, and as he was at that time staying with his older brother out in New York state, I took the liberty of sending K. T. a check amounting, as J recall it at this moment, to three or four hundred dollars, and which represented the balance of K.F.’s account in my hands. The boys both left the New York place soon after I happen to know, and I have had no word yet acknowledging receipt of the check in question. Neither have I had from K. F. a request for further funds, something a bit out of the ordinary. In the meantime I have deposited the $2,000 to the boy's account in our local bank and will hold it there until I receive further word as to its final disposition.

I have had a very bitter disappointment this summer in my failure to connect with our good old friend, C. L. Chow who has recently been in America and even in Andover. Then I heard that he was in the country I wrote him suggesting a possible visit to my camp in northern New Hampshire, but I imagine that he felt that this would be attempting too much.At any rate the next news I had of him was in the form of letters, from him and from some of my Andover friends telling of his visit to Andover and to the haunts of his school boy days. I don't know anyone whom I would have been gladder to welcome to Andover and my own home and it hurts badly to know that Mr. Chow is already on his way back to his own land and that I did not even have a glimpse of him while he was here. His warm and friendly kindness to me during my visit to China some twelve years ago was unique and has never been forgotten.

With warmest personal regard, believe me always

Very sincerely yours

Dear Charlie,

I have your letter of July 18th.

It is very difficult for me to estimate at this distance how much money you require to meet your necessary summer expenses. I am enclosing a check for one hundred dollars and shall count on you to make it go as far as possible, for you have had some pretty heavy doctor’s bills to meet this year and your other outlays have not been small.

Your father has not written me anything about your early return to China. Indeed, if I remember correctly, his last reference to the matter in his letters to me indicated that he was disposed to let you try it out here a bit longer. Evidently he decided to leave the matter to be settled through the medium of your brother. I haven’t your father’s letters with me here at camp I cannot be quite sure of his latest expressed wishes to me on the subject, but the above is my recollection of them.

I do hope the peeky collar bone will mend fast and that you will soon be relieved of any further pain or inconvenience on that score.

Please give my greetings and warm regards to your brother. I trust that the summer is bringing him a speedy and sure return to the best of health and vigor.

With best wishes to you personally, believe me,

Always sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tsai:

Thank you for your kind letter or April 26. The two thousand dollars ($2,000) referred to was duly received and credited to Kuo Fang’s account. This leaves him a generous balance at the present time, though I find it very hard to induce the boy to keep his expenses down to the normal level. I don’t think he means to be extravagant, but money slips through his fingers like water through a sieve.

I note your desire that Kao Fang shall go home with his brother after the closing of the current school year. Two days ago Kuo Fang brought me a telegram from Kuo Tsao’s wife calling at attention to her husband’s illness in New York. I approved at once of the plan to have Kuo Fang go to New York and see his brother in person in order to be sure that everything possible was being done for his welfare. I told him, too, that I should expect him to advise me promptly if my presence there would be of any possible help. I further instructed him to notify Mr.Wickham, for I feel sure that he would be just the one to see that everything was done for Kuo Tsao if his condition rendered special care necessary.

Kuo Fang returned last night and tells me that he finds his brother much better, though he is still confined to his bed. He also advises me that the best of medical at ention was being given the boy. I shall endeavor to keep as closely in touch with the situation as possible in order to be assured that the boy is having every attention and care that can be secured, though I judge from the last report that he is now well on the road to recovery.

With warmest personal regard, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>

My dear Kuo Tsao:

Your brother is in a pretty unsettled frame of mind and seeks my advice. Frankly, I don’t know just what advice to give nor do I know how much authority or right I have to give any. Before attempting to solve the problem I need your help.

K.P. feels that he is not getting anywhere in his college preparatory work and that college is probably not the end he should have in view. On this point I am inclined to agree with him. Indeed, I have felt for some that the boy was not making worth while progress in his studies and would not gain much from a college connection later, even if he were successful in establishing it.

The boy tells me now that you are disposed to favor a business course for him. That, it seems to me, is about as wise a course as he can adopt at the present time. Naturally, it would be difficult him to make this new contact at this time of the year, at least, in any good school. Again, I don’t feel that I have the authority to authorize him to change his plans so radically as this without some advice from home. As a matter of fact, I very seldom hear from your father and am not at all clear as to his wishes for the boy. Hence, I am turning to you for light and help, if you can supply them. Just what ought I to do and what ought I to adivise under the existing circumstances. Please tell me frankly.

My warm personal regards to you.

Ever sincerely yours.

My dear Mr.Tsai:

Thank you for your interesting and welcome letter of February 18th.

Very recently, I had a most delightful visit fron Kuo Tsao, who stopped in Andover several days, on his way to New York. It was a real joy to see him again and to find him, apparently, in such excellent health and spirits. He told me of his physical ailments of the past, but he certainly shows little evidence of them at present. He has retained his youthful looks and vigor to such an extent that the time that has actually passed since he was here seems of incredible length. His brother of course, was delighted to see him.

Kuo Fang has pretty substantially overdrawn his account again, by the way, and as I have had to borrow ahead in his favor I have called his brother’s attention to the situation. Very probably you will have heard from him by this time. I am enclosing the account as it stands to date, though I dislike, exceedingly, to have to trouble you with these business matters.

Trusting that you and your family, including all the old Andover representatives, will survive the excitement and strain of New Year, and with my heartiest good wishes for the days ahead,

believe me, always

Sincerely yours,

My dear Tsai:

Your very nice note just reached me. I was on the point of writing you myself to tell you how sorry I was that my engagements kept me from seeing you again before you left town. Next time you simply must come to the house and bring your bag with you. Then there won’t be any chance for us to miss connections. Anyway, it was just great to see as much of you as I did, even if this did what my appetite for more.

We shall certainly allow K. F. to go down to the wedding. I wish I could join him, if for no other reason than to make up for only just having missed the wedding festivities in Hong Kong in 1912. I don’t know whether I can get off on that particular day, though if I should find it possible to do so you might see me yet.

By the way, I hate to mention it, but as that young brother of yours has a way of spending money more freely than I could wish, he is forever overdrawing his account and there comes, every year, a period before the remittance comes from your father which I have to borrow funds to keep him along. Just now he is two or three hundred dollars over the line, if I remember correctly. I am just wondering if it would not be a bit easier all round if the remittance from home could be made a little earlier or, perhaps, in two installments. This would ease the situation a bit for me and would save borrowing, something that I don’t like to do if I can help it. I thought, perhaps, you might be willing to explain the situation to your father. I meant to talk with you about it when you were here, but there was so much else to discuss that was much pleasanter that I carelessly forgot it.

My best wishes go with this letter. I know the wedding will be a happy occasion for you all, and I trust that it will be a beginning of increasingly happy day a for you. Some day I hope to meet bride-to-be, but as bride-that-is.

Always sincerely your friend,
