<text>Dear Mr. Robinson:

Your letter of September 17 reached me Saturday afternoon and that of September 18 reached me this morning. In the meantime I have been wiring to Mary's friends and to the indefinite Trenton address, seeking information as to Mary's whereabouts and plans. I can't understand her action. She had my definite permission to visit her friend in Springfield and with the understanding that she was going direct from Springfield to Elmira. Naturally the discovery that she was in Trenton upset me badly, though I am assuming that she found it easier to reach Elmira by way of New York and chose that route, stopping over for the week-end with the friend in question. She had visited once before the school friends in Dover, Delaware, not far from Wilmington, but the Trenton friend is a new one, though doubtless O.K. Mary's Springfield friend wired yesterday, giving the exact address, and I have sent two messages to Mary since that address arrived, asking her to wire you the details of her plans, with the date and hour of arrival in Buffalo. I gave the New York address and hoped the message might reach you before you left or would be forwarded to you en route.

On receipt of your second letter this morning, l with your sister's address, I wired Mary at once, again using the Trenton address, asking her to telegraph your sister the hour of her expected arrival in Buffalo, Syracuse, or Binghamton. I had to make this message a bit indefinite, as I did not know which route would be likely to prove the natural one from Trenton. The earlier assumption was that Mary was to go direct from Springfield, though Buffalo would seemingly be the objective. My fear is that this message may have arrived too late and that Mary may now be in Elmira.

Naturally this action of Mary and seeming disregard of my interest and authority have distressed me greatly. It is an attitude that was apparently strongly encouraged when Mary was at Abbot Academy last year, furnishing one of the reasons why I was glad to sever that connection when I did, though I would have been willing to have put up with even this disturbing factor if it had not been necessary to make the change for scholastic reasons.

Under the circumstance I am forwarding your letter to Mary, as I think you have not put the matter a bit too strongly. A wire received from Mary last Saturday reads: "Impossible to keep Mr. Robinson's plan if you wish me to be loyal to you. Letter explains." No letter of explanation has come, and what in the world Mary means by loyalty to me in the matter is beyond my comprehension. I answered that message more vigorously than ever and told her that I must insist on the full acceptance of your plan, which had her father's approval as well as my own. If I could possibly leave my duties here at this time, I should jump on the train for Elmira myself and try to straighten out the tangle. As it is I can only hope that if your sister misses Mary en route to college, she will be generous enough to make an early trip there and use her good influences to put into operation the plan on which we had agreed.

As to your expenses, by all means send me a statement. I am sure that it is only right and certainly in accordance with Mr. Sun's own wishes that you should be reimbursed for all the extra cash, to say nothing of time, you have invested in this problem. I don't believe that even Mr. Sun realizes the anxious thought and time that some of us give to these interesting visitors from the Orient, but I know that it has always been his wish that every extra expense which their presence has caused should be promptly met in this way.

I, too, had assumed that Mary quite understood that she was to consult me and follow my wishes before making her definite plans for a room at Elmira. Before talking with you, I had assumed, of course that she would go through rhe usual process and take a dormitory room, for it seemed to me that, in view of her five years experience in this country she would be competent to do this and without detriment to her work and standing. Frankly, my summer was about the most upset one I have ever gone through, and in view of the necessity of getting my daughter and Miss Clemons off for Europe, coupled with the critical illness of my wife, whose death for a number of weeks was regarded as only a matter of days, I am afraid that my mind did not center to the extent it should have done on Mary's particular problem. Further, I am sure that we can yet straighten matters out, and I have become sufficiently accustomed to Mary's protests against plans that did not fit in completely with her own wishes not to be unduly disturbed by that factor.

I shall continue to keep you posted as to Mary's movements and progress, at least so far as Mary herself is willing to post me.

Very sincerely yours,

Your letter of September 1 has just reached me and I am filing with your accounts, your statements of expenses to date. As soon as I return to Andover, which will be within the next day or two, I will send you another check and also forward a check to the college for the $350 that will be due on your tuition for this year.

I like emmensely [sic] your suggestion of taking a nurses course at Yale. Frankly, both Miss Clemons and I have always approved of that desire of yours to study to be a nurse, and I shall only be to glad, therefore, to use what influence I can with your father to persuade him that this is not only one of the most honorable professions, but one for which you seem well adapted and in which you could render your country real service. The Yale school is one of the best, and a degree from it would be well worth while.

                <text>Dear Tom:

I am immensely interested in the contents of your letter of recent date.

Of course, after the experience at Middlebury, you are bound to find a new and especially larger institution, as you would surely find a now and larger place, wholly different and in many spots, terribly disappointing. You have a complete readjustment to make, and that takes time and patience if it is to be made right in the end. I know you will find it hard sledding for a while, but I am equally confident that in a big university like Yale where there are scores, indeed hundreds, of good level-headed, red-blooded Americans, you will in time make contacts and find now and delightful friends. So don’t get discouraged, but keep your head up and tackle the main job that is yours just now.

Of course, after the friendly contacts and complete understanding at Middlebury, it must hurt to have ignorant street urchins and thugs make uncomplimentary remarks to yon on the street. That, however, is something that all of us encounter the world over, and will so long as human nature in every race and every land develops its different types of humanity. I can well recall some of the comments, which I of course couldn’t understand exactly, but the significance of which was all too apparent, that were passed to me the first few times I strolled about the city of Peking. As long as human nature is in a measure perverse, as it surely is, and until the time when we come to realize that skin or color or race make the real man no hotter or no worse than he actually is in character and soul, so long must we face these disagreeable factors in life.

Anyway, I am sure you are going to win out. Go to it as you would tackle a job on the football field with the determination that you don’t propose to be licked and that you will prove before the game is over that you are just as good as if not a bit better than the other follow.

Ever sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Mr. Sun:

Your most interesting letters of June 7 and 11 have been duly received. Charlie has also written me, enclosing the copy of your letter to me which you sent to him. He seems very much pleased at the prospect, and it seem to me, as an outsider, that the opportunity and experience involved should prove of great value to Charlie in the end.

I have already sent Charlie funds to provide for his summer work at Columbia and for the necessary living expenses. I am writing him again this morning, and will be ready to meet him at any time and discuss his further plans. As you probably know, he is taking some shorthand and typewriting work this summer, and I have emphasized in my letter to him the importance of those in view of the special work which he will carry in connection with Dr. Tong Shao Yi's mission.

I have heard so much of Dr. Tong in the past that I trust I may have the opportunity of meeting him when he is in this country. It will also be a pleasure to me to aid him and his friends in any way I can while they are in America.

With warm personal regards, believe me always

Very sincerely yours, </text>

                <text>My dear Mrs. Sun:

Your two interesting letters of February 17 and 20 have been duly received and I thank you for them. Naturally I am dreadfully distressed to learn of your father-in-law's serious illness, though your second note with its reassurances brought much relief. I passed the good word along at once to the children who had heard of their father's illness, and were greatly disturbed. I assured them further that I felt confident that if there had been any further developments in the case that were unsatisfactory, they would have received some later word from home, and that no news could therefore be fairly regarded as good news. I hope that this judgment was correct.

I had already acknowledged the receipt of the telegraphic remittance of four thousand dollars for the accounts of the three children. Doubtless my letter will have been received by this time.

All three of the children seem to be in good health and the boys are doing steady and high grade work. Mary seems to find continued difficulty in her studies, though I am very much hoping that a better report will come in before the end of the year when she will have had a chance to become thoroughly familiar with the new work and the character of the demands it makes upon her.

Please give my warmest and friendliest greetings and good wishes to your father-in-law. I shall look forward eagerly to some further and I earnestly hope more encouraging word of his improvement and ultimate restoration to full health and vigor.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

Mr. Thomas Sun
Middlebury College
Middlebury, Vermont

Dear Tom:

I have your interesting letter of recent date and am glad to learn of your plans for the coming summer. Whether the New York plan is altogether wise or not, I am not in a position to say. That must be determined by yourself and the way you take hold of the job there and resist or give in to the distracting influences that are invariably found in a big city. The final judgment, therefore, will have to be left until fall.

As to the expense involved, it seems to me to be pretty heavy. If your money is spent wisely, however, I am not averse to allowing you to meet all legitimate charges. On the other hand. I think it better to send the total sum in installments rather than in one lump. This will give you a chance to figure a little more closely what you are spending and how you are coming out. I am sending herewith, therefore, a check for three hundred dollars to help you close up the year at Middlebury and to take care of the opening expenses of the summer.

With all best wishes, believe me
Very sincerely yours.
AES/C
Enol, (check)</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I was very glad to hear that you understand that the New York trip was only misunderstood each other between Mr. Sanborn and I.

I just received a letter from my father, and he said better for me to stay at Mrs. Erving's again this year. I wrote and told him about my being in a faculty house, the coming year, so I told him about the view point of mine about the faculty house. He thought I did better stay at Mrs. Erving's; so the boys won't bother me while I do my lesson. And other reasons the boys often come to people room to brrow [sic] things or take it without asking the owner.

Sometimes the boys like to rough house; they might put me in the pig mess too. When they come to my room; I can't tell them to get out, if I do they might think that I high-hate them.

I don't what to do just now. See, you have been a father to me in this country for three years now. Everytime I have difficults [sic] I alwys [sic] come to see you about it. In this country except Helen you are the next close friend I get. So I want you tell me what to do. Good luck to you always,

Very sincerely yours, </text>
