Mr. F.L. Bateman

My dear Bateman:

I greatly appreciate yaw letter of September 27 and the pains you have taken to try to locate Miss Tsai’s missing suitcase.

On receipt of your letter I conferred Miss Tsai at once, and she is mots emphatic in stating that there were nine pieces of baggage altogether, that belonged to the party staying at the Drake, she lists them as follows:

Her brother Alfred: two nieces, one travelling bag and one suitcase
Mr. Lieu: two pieces, one a bag and one a suitcase
Miss Joan (I forget the last name): two pieces, one bag and one suitcase
Helen herself:	three pieces, two bags and one suitcase

She tells me that the suitcase was brown leather.

Miss Tsai is very emphatic in her conviction that there were nine rather than eight pieces involved, and this would tend to show, as suggested by you, that the less mast have occurred at the hotel rather than at the station or en route. For this reason I am still hopeful that the missing article may be found. Miss Tsai adds that the check-up on the t rain showed eight pieces and not seven.
Again my thanks for your friendly and painstaking effort in behalf of this interesting youngster, who evidently is less concerned ever the loss than her father is probably likely to be when he seeks to repair it.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>Sept 22, 1926
Mr. Alfred E. Stearns, Principal,
Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.

My dear Mr. Stearns:

This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 20th inst. I received a wire from Miss Tsai dispatched enroute on the evening of her departure from Chicago.

On the next day we instituted a very thorough search for the missing suit case. The chief porter, as well as the porter on the baggage, from their quarters in the Drake were interviewed and a search of the hotel was made and they advised me they could not locate the suit case in question.

My chauffeur, who handled the baggage for the party from the Drake to the Baltimore & Ohio Station, tells me that he had eight pieces. The station master at the B&O depot at Chicago together with the Red Cap who handled the baggage from the car to the check room and from the check room later to the train, claim to have remembered having handled eight pieces.

It will assist me materially, therefore, if Miss Tsai could tell you whether or not there were more than eight pieces of baggage in possession of the porter when they packed up at the Drake Hotel. If there were nine pieces it would indicate the shortage occurred in the hotel. If, however, they found that only seven pieces were received on the train by them it would indicate the missing suit case was lost somewhere between the check room and the train.

We are still continuing an exhaustive research and cherish the hope that this package may yet be found. I will speak to Mr. Drake tomorrow to see what if anything further can be done at the hotel.

It is needless to say that we feel very much chagrined to think that case should have occurred in of course write you promptly any further developments to report.

Yours sincerely
F.L.Bateman

My dear Mr. Bateman:

The two latest Chinese words to be entrusted to my care reached Andover a day or two ago, the son and daughter of Admiral Tsai of Peking, who, I believe, is a personal friend of yours. The girl, Miss Helen Tsai, as I understand she is to be known in this country, is distressed over the loss in Chicago of her suitcase, which she tells me disappeared somewhere between the Drake Hotel and the train on which she left Chicago. As nearly as I can gather from her story of conditions, the bag was probably left at the Drake Hotel or in the station In Chicago, where I think the time for boarding the train was extremely short. Anyway, the bag is missing and I am wondering whether there is any chance that you could start investigations looking to its recovery, though I am afraid that it is perhaps unlikely that such efforts will meet with success.

It has occurred to me that Mr. Drake himself, a good personal friend of mine, would be eager to institute an unusually thorough search in his own hotel in case the bag was left there. I understand that the bag is brown in color with white lettering, the letters representing Miss Tsai initials. Y. K.T, I shall appreciate, as will she, may help you can give us.

Very sincerely yours

My dear Helen:

Your interesting and cheerful letter reached me yesterday, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was very nice of you to write and I must congratulate you on doing so remarkably well on your first attempt. I am perfectly sure that, if I had had the same amount of training in Chinese that you have had in English and had attempted to write you a letter in your native tongue, I could you have begun to do as well as have done in this instance.

It was good to get that little glimpse of you at your school last week, and I hope to get over again before long and have a look at you when the actual school year and school work are under way. I am sure you will like the school and will go ahead very fast in your work, for certainly you have the right kind of spirit to assure success.

Did you see Alfred last Sunday? He called at my house Sunday afternoon, my cook tells me, while I was out for a short walk. I think my sister-in-law must have driven him down. As she told me sometime ago that she hoped to drive him down to Merrimac some day, I thought that very probably they had stopped in Andover on their way to see you. I certainly hope that he had a chance to visit you, for I know that this would have meant a great deal to you and to him, too. I wonder if he is still “Oberlin sick?”

Wishing you very success in your work and plenty of enjoyment from the school life, and hoping to see you soon, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Dr. Sze:

I have received your kind letter of the 21st of July last. I have this morning sent you a wire as follows: "Ask Dr. Stearns to place children in same town if not in same school. Tsai". I wish to have them so placed for the first couple of years so that they may not get very homesick. They may be placed separately afterwards. I have also sent you by mail a draft for $4000 gold for the children which I expect will reach you before their arrival.

My children are very fortunate in having you and Dr. Stearns take such an interest in them. I shall appreciate any little attention you may be able to give them from time to time.

With many thanks and good wishes,
Tsai Ting Kan
