Admiral H. K. Tu

My dear Mr. Tu:

I am enclosing herewith a letter which I have just written to your boy in answer to one received from him yesterday and the contents of which have distressed me beyond words. I really don’t know what I ought to do, for not for the world would I leave Kong stranded in a position that would mean real disaster to him. At the same time, he has so utterly ignored the instructions of both you and me that I feel that something definite and rigid has to be done if the boy is not to go on drifting hopelessly and indefinitely. Further, he has absolutely ignored me now for months and not even hinted that he was not carrying out the instructions which you earlier sent him through me and which at the time he agreed to obey. I find that he is back once more attempting school work with boys years below his age with no definite goal that I can see in view. It seems to me most deplorable. Under the circumstances I have felt that it is only fair to you that you should know exactly how I view the situation, and hence I am sending you herewith a copy of the letter I here just written him.

I still have on hand funds which you have sent me sufficient to carry the boy for several months. The school bill which he has just sent me calls for 160.00 and the allowances for which he has asked would probably consume a good part of the funds on hand. I have not felt Justified in paying this bill and for the reasons given in my letter; If you authorise me to do so, I shall of course comply promptly with your instructions, for I have only one desire and that is to carry out your expressed wishes and thereby to do what seems to you best for the boy himself. I should be disposed to be more lenient if Kong himself had not practically ignored me for the past two or three years except on those occasions when he desired money. I have pleaded with him again and again and have appealed to his loyalty and the responsibility he owes to you, and apparently in vain.
In the letter I have just received from the boy, he tells me that a friend of his. Mr. William Moy, has written you pleading in his behalf and that I will doubtless receive some instructions from you to pay his bills and approval from you as to the plans he has adopted. Of course the moment any such instructions are received, I shall act promptly upon them whatever feelings I may have as to the wisdom of such a course, but I do feel that I must have your endorsement to follow before taking such an important step, especially in view of the instructions received from you at an earlier date.

May I suggest that if it is your desire that Kong be given this further opportunity to pursue elementary studies, a cable message to this effect be sent me, for I have no doubt that the boy must be living at present on his friends and I am especially anxious to take no position or to do anything that will involve farther embarrassment, financially or otherwise, to you.

Assuring you again of my very sincere regret that I have to write in such a vein as this and that I seem to have been so completely unsuccessful in helping you realise your high ambitions for your boy, believe me, with personal regards,

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. K.Y.Tu

Boston, Massachusetts

My dear Tu:

I am enclosing the customary check for one hundred dollars for your June allowance and am propted to do so by the receipt yesterday of a letter from your father enclosing a check for your account, from which I quote: “You will please inform my son that this is my last remittance. Should he wish to return, he may use it as his passage money, and should he decide to remain, to be an apprentice in any job that would suit him most, I would not object”….. “Would it be possible to get him in one of the Ford factories?” From the above, it is evident that your father is willing that you should take a job in the Ford factory, for example, if you could secure one. It is equally clear that he is unwilling for your to continue your education along the lines you have been following to date.

Under the circumstances, it is evident that your father expects you to earn your own way if you are to remain in this country. I am sending the check, therefore, that you may be able to clear up your present indebtedness and have an opportunity to search at once for a good job if you are to delay the return to China.

Faithfully yours,

Your letter with its request for your monthly allowance, which I have just received, comes	as a decided surprise. I hardly see how you could have sent it. Mr.	Wong	in Washington now has charge of your affairs, and Mrs. Hall and I have both learned to our surprise and deep regret that he has been unable to persuade you to carry out his wishes and came to Washington, although in making that request he has been acting with the approval and authority of your father and Mr. Tong. At Mr. Tong’s request, after he had talked the matter over with your father, I forwarded to Mr. Wong in Washington funds to be used to meet your expenses. Mr. Wong now has charge of your affairs, therefore. He has requested you to report in Washington before this, and I hope you will have sense enough to appreciate the importance of obeying his instructions and going to Washington at once. It is certainly unfair to your father and Mr. Tong for you to go on as you have done thus far. Incidentally I cannot help feeling that in years to come you will be chagrined and humiliated to look back on your record in America and realize that you have fallen so far short of attaining the splendid standards which have been so uniformly maintained by the other Chinese boys who have come to us in recent years. I cannot help feeling that a deep obligation rests upon you involving your country as well as your parents and immediate friends. Won’t you try to appreciate this fact before it is too late, and do what you can in the time remaining to win for yourself something at least of that enviable reputation which the other Chinese boys have so justly won.

Assuring you of my deep personal interest in you and your welfare, and of my desire at all times to aid you in any definite way in attaining those standards to which I have referred, believe me,

My dear Mrs.Pope,

Thank you for your kind and frank letter regarding Wong Vung Long who plans to enter the Academy this fall. We have had a number of Chinese boys here for the past few years and they are among the brightest and most acceptable boys we have in school. I have become very fond of them and I shall be glad to do anything I can to carry out in the case of your friend the ideals cherished for him by both you and his father.

At the present time, the Chinese students of the Eastern States are holding conference meetings here in Andover and I wish you might find it possible to attend some of these public meetings. There are about 100 boys, a more interesting lot of fellows or more interesting meetings it would be difficult to find. It is too bad that the new comer could not have reached us in time to meet the many Chinese boys who are here at present.

I shall of course advise you when the young man reaches Andover, I shall be glad to have you come here to make his earliest days in this XX

Thanking you for writing me so fully and frankly, believe me,

Very sincerely yours

My dear Mr. Bingham:

Mr. Kwan, of whom you inquire, is now a member of our school community. He arrived during my absence in the West, and hence I have seen little of him until within the past few week. He has not been at all well, which 1 think accounts in a measure for his seeming failure to adapt himself to conditions quite so well as our other Chinese boys have done. If he recovers his health, he will probably recover his spirits also. His present address is #49 Salem Street, Andover.

                <text>Dear Tommy:

I nearly fainted when I found your letter on my desk a day or two ago. Do you blame me? Curiously, I had just returned from a hurried trip up to Connecticut Lake where there are so many associations that bring you and your antics vividly to mind; indeed the natives up there have not forgotten you yet, and a frequent inquiry, which they have addressed to me from time to time during recent years, runs like this: "Whatever has become of Tommy Lee who used to come up here for his summers?" Of course I couldn’t tell them, at least until my good friend Tsai advised me recently that he had taken you under his roof - to keep you out of jail, I suppose.

Well it was mighty good to get even that little slant on your whereabouts and doings. Now that you have gathered courage to write, and especially as you are not asking for money, do for goodness’ sake let the habit become fixed and keep me posted. I am immensely interested in all you old Andover boys have there and am counting on you to do big things for your country. In its present state of chaos it needs some vision and unselfish common sense to get the machinery of the government running smoothly. Unless the various elements that have been trying to cut each other’s throats stop their nonsense and throw out some real and unselfish patriotism, China will fall a prey to her stronger neighbors for years to come. As it is, under proper leadership she ought to be one of the greatest and most influential leaders of the world. Why don’t some of you Andover fellows jump into the fray and become the Roosevelts of China. It is a wonderful opportunity. Roosevelt, himself, never had its equal, and I am not sure even that Lincoln did; for a strong and united China, in which the splendid qualities of your people were in the ascendency [sic] and the weaker ones eliminated or at least held in check, would easily be one of the most influential factors in the world for peace and the prosperity of all.

Here I am preaching. I suppose I dare do this because you are so far away and I cannot see the expression of amused disgust that my little sermons sometimes call out on the faces of those who have to listen; but I am in deadly earnest this time, for, frankly, one of the inspiring features of the happy and intimate contacts I have had with some of you Chinese boys has been the belief that, when you returned to China, you would do great things for your country and the world. On the whole, I have been a bit disappointed to date, though I am not going to lose all my optimism yet.

Remember me warmly, please, to all the old friends. How I would love to see you all again and in your native land. Perhaps I shall some day. Who knows?

Anyway, the latch string at my home is always out for you and all the rest if any of you over return to the scenes of your old school days. Good luck and success to you!

Ever sincerely yours,</text>

My daer Mr. Hu:

I am grateful to you for sending me the letter of Messrs. Chu and Fang, written to you short before they left us. The boys here are still at a loss to account for the unusual action of these two boys; but they all seem pretty well agreed that some outside of influence has been at work. As a matter of curiosity, if for no other reason, I should be glad to learn the real facts if you are ever able to secure them.

Very sincerely,
