<text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I have been here for over two weeks but I have not received a single answering letter from my friends in the States. As I told you, Sir, I feel awfully lonely in London. Their weather, their rooms, and their food all disagree with me. I never realized how good America was until I left it.

Miss Clemons was so good to give me a reply last week; it was certainly cheering to hear from a friend. She is now still on the Continent but she expects to come to London this Christmas, when I hope to have the pleasure of seeing her.

My job is very pleasant to me. if only my father would give up the idea of having me get another degree, I would be perfectly happy. At present I feel blue enough without studying. But if I have to study and work all day and then worry about books in the evening, I shall go mad in a week. Dr. Sze frankly told me himself that father’s desire to have me get another degree is purely vanity. Mr. M.T. Liang’s sons all went back to China with dozens of degrees attached to their names; so father wants his sons to return home with equal honor. The Minister added further that I had better study for a certificate in Diplomacy or something (it didn’t matter much what) just to please my father. I locked up the other day the catalogue for the London School of Economics, and found that there are three things I can do: (1) To study three years for an LLB (2) two years for a certificate in Diplomacy (3) one year for the same. But in any of these, I have to go to classes spreaded out during various parts of the day. So even if I work only part time in the Legation, I shall have to go there only in the morning one day and only in the afternoon another day. I really don’t see how I can work or study in that manner. If my father insists upon my taking a postgraduate degree, I would rather give up my present job and return to the States to finish what I have begun in Columbia. I simply cannot study and work both in London. My father can't see that all this business is not helping but ruining me. He first promised me to let me go home this June, then he made me study, and now he wants me to study and work as well. He is doing all this for my good so I can't say anything to him. But I believe, Sir, that you understand better. That is why I am telling it all to you. If you can do anything to help me, I shall be ever so grateful. I think I have complained too much after you and my father have done so much for me these many years. But I really
can’t bear the situation any longer.

As for myself, my health is good but my spirits are low. I am trying very hard to cheer myself up by going out to supper with my new friends every day. But it's no use. As soon as I get home in my room, I feel blue again. May be it is the weather. But whatever it is, it is certainly getting me.

Minister Sze is very kind to me. He is no doubt a wonderful man to work under. My job is the pleasantest
part of my dreary life in London.

With best regards and wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Ever faithfully yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

I hate to be appealing for money already, but my expenses have been such that it is absolutely necessary. For your reference I am enclosing a bill from the tailor who made three suits for me, all of which are ordered upon Minister Sze's suggestion. The figure of two pounds and 12 shillings which you see added in ink at the bottom of the account are for some dress shirts, ties, and scarf that I bought. The total, therefore, amounts to 31 pounds and 2 shillings or about $148.00, besides these I had to purchase such small things as studs, stiff collars shoes, suspenders, etc., none of which I had in the States. Cut of the three hundred dollars which I had left after my voyage, I have a little over $100.00 left. My room rent including breakfast every morning is 36 shillings or about a bit over six dollars a week. This Christmas I expect to buy some present to send to different friends both in China and in the States; I expect to need more than $100 to carry me through with some margin. The reason I am writing you so early is because it takes sometime for a letter to get to America and back to England again, and I don’t like to be borrowing money from anyone here. Please send me what you think fit, that is, to last me till Easter time. My father, as you know, Sir, has instructed me confidentially not to take a cent of my salary for my work in the Legation.

Now, a word about myself and my work. England is a good place but not quite so good as America. I find everything here so different, and so uncomfortable. I have made a number of new acquaintances but somehow I still feel rather lonely for my friends in the States. I am most happy when working hard; not only because working keeps me from brooding too much but because it is really a thrill for me. Dr. Sze is very considerate and kind to all his subordinates and all my colleagues, so far as I am able to find out, are nice to me. I don’t mix with them much; because I live outside of the Legation and also because they don’t seem to be the same type as I. They are all newly from China; what they say and do are not at all of interest to me.
We are friendly to each other, that’s all. Most of my friends are students.

I have written Miss Clemons a letter, but have not as yet received an answer. I hope that the letter has not been miscarried. Mary is the only one from whom I got a letter of all my friends in the States and in China. It was certainly cheering to hear from the other side of the Atlantic. I read over every word twice, I hope that some of my other friends will write me soon.

Sir, my best wishes to you and hoping that you will have a very good Thanksgiving Holiday as well as a very, very merry Christmas coming. I wish that I was able to spend it in America with you.

Obediently yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

Thank you for letting me read your letter from my father. He has written me a somewhat similar message, which I received just two days ago; I sincerely hope that my appointment will not be premature as was my job in Dr. Tong’s proposed mission. Thank you for your good and kind wishes, and I hope that I shall like England as I have America and do well in that country in my future studies as well as in my work in the Legation.

There is one thing which I wish to ask your advice about. My father intends to have me continue my studying in London. That is very well, but he also said that Dr. Sze will send for me around Christmas time. Columbia, as you know, Sir, follows the semester system. Therefore if I leave this country before the end of January, I shall not be able to receive any credit for the work which I am doing now at Columbia. It seems rather a pity that I should loose [sic] these points after a fall’s work. Don’t you think that it would be better that I stay here till the mid-year examinations are over in order that I may be credited for what I have done and then continue my studies in England? I shall write to my father the same and see if he can’t arrange with Dr. Sze to have my appointment postponed for two months.

Columbia opened on last Thursday. I am carrying the following courses: History of the British Empire, Modern Diplomatic History of the Far East, Government of England, and Basic Factors in International Relations. It is pretty hard to study in New York City, but I hope to overcome the difficulty. New York, however, has its attractions for me. I have more friends, who keep me from being homesick. In fact, my desire to go home is now almost gone. Besides Chinese friends I have also my old college chums whom I see rather often. Some of them are studying in Columbia as I am; while others are working in New York. I have been in the Amherst Club several times and have seen other old friends there. This weekend several of us plan to make a trip to Amherst by auto to see a football game and the Alma Mater. I am surprised that I feel homesick for the old place already.

I have been looking forward see you in New York at the beginning of this month as you have mentioned that you will be here month, but you must have been very busy.

Obediently yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

This is just a note to inform you concerning the marks which I received as a result of a summer’s study at Columbia University. They are the following:

Problems of American Political Organization----B
Problems of American Governmemtal [sic] Functions----C
The Administration of Justice----B

By virtue of passing all three of the subjects which I took this last summer, I have secured seven credits toward my graduation from Middlebury, that is provided these credits will be accepted, which they most likely will do.

I have now merely fourteen (l4) points to pass for graduation. If things go along as they have been in the past, I will be able to get those credits by February and with a few credits to spare at that.
I am leaving for Middlebury in a very few days. I hope to be there by Friday at the latest. I plan to do a little work there before school starts.

I am going to write to Syracuse and Harvard concerning the graduate school in Political Science, and when I have formed my opinion about them, I will be glad to have a talk with you sometimes this coming fall.

Sincerely yours</text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

Please do not think that I have forgotten you. Really life in New York is so dull that I actually have nothing to say. At my father’s request I am now studying typewriting and book-keeping, both of which are very interesting subjects.

A classmate of mine invited me out to Long Island last Sunday when the hot spell was on. We had a swim on a private beach and a good ride around the country places. It was certainly nice of him to think of me, especially during that intolerable weather. We used to room in Morrow Dormitory on the same floor. He is working in the city, so we see each other rather often, For the last few days we are having cool weather again in New York, but no one can tell how long it’s going to stay. I suppose that the climate up at the Lakes is fine as usual.

Our Minister to Enland [sic], Dr. Sze, is coming to the States during the early part of September, arriving Vancouver on the 7th. I presume that I shall have to report to him first before joining the mission headed by Dr. Tong. I would like to see you at least a week before that date if possible. That will mean a trip to Andover around the end of August. Can you inform me, Sir, whether you will be at home or in camp at about that time? Of course, I would prefer to see you at Andover; since it would be more convenient for me, but at any rate, I must say good-bye to you before leaving for China.

Obediently yours,</text>
