Your letter of April 12 in regard to Mary Sun, the daughter of your personal friend, has just been received. I can assure you that we shall be glad to do everything we can for Miss Sun, and I trust that she will enter Elmira and that her contact here will be as mutually happy and helpful as that of our little friends Rhoda and Alice.

I am sending Dr. Stearns one of our latest catalogues and a book of views.

                <text>
My dear Dr. Sze:

Thank you so much for the interest you have taken in Mary Sun's case and the most helpful information you have been able to secure from Elmira. I have read Miss French’s letter with keen interest. Miss French’s estimate of the situation coincides very closely with that which I had already formed for myself.
Mary is unquestionably below par physically and so mentally. Consequently it is only natural that her difficulties should take on an exaggerated size and tend to depress her. Further, and I have found this equally true, Mary does show at times evidences of having lean a bit spoiled and is inclined to be a little restless when flattery and flatterers are not forthcoming. It was just this situation at Abbot Academy which I so keenly deplored and which tended to bring to the front again in Mary a weakness which I had believed was up to that time largely overcome. Apparently at both Sea Pines, where Mary went in the summer, as well as at Elmira Mary has been placed more on a footing with the other girls, and it has been a bit difficult for her to surrender the especial and sometimes somewhat excessive adulations that were offered by well-meaning, though at times a bit impulsive, friends. I feel sure, though, that, once the physical situation has improved, Mary will look at things in a more rational and happy way.

Recently Mary has been writing her brother Arthur, as she has written me on one or two occasions, pleading that every influence be used on her father to permit her to return to China at the end of the current year. Mr. Sun has also recently written Arthur urging him to stay in America for an additional year, and Arthur, too, has shown an inclination to rebel at the decision and has joined with Mary in urging me to influence his father, if I can, to rescind the decision and permit the return to China next summer. Between the two I am hard pressed, though I imagine that Mr. Sun is influenced in part perhaps, by the unsettled conditions in China and the feeling that it would be better for the children to remain here until conditions become more normal. Maybe I am wrong, but in any case I shall, of course, do my best to carry out his expressed wishes.

I think the suggestion of having Mary pass her Easter vacation with you at your wife’s invitation is a most excellent one. Apparently Mary is not eager to visit any but one or two old Abbot Academy friends who, I fear, are somewhat of the type of those over generous friends to whom I have referred

Dr. Sao—Ke Alfred Sze—2

above. Nothing could be better for her than to pass her vacation under the normal and wholesome influences which would surround her in our family circle, and I hope very much, therefore, that the plan can be carried out.

Again assuring you of my deep appreciation of the most valuable help you have given me and with warm personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

P.S. I am returning Miss French’s letter, which I hope you will keep, as it may prove helpful to us to be able to refer to it later.

Your two letters of June 29 have just reached me, and, curiously, at a time when the Tsai children have been on the grounds here with me. They have been devoting the time intervening between the close of their schools and the opening of their summer camps, which they are entering this week, half in Andover and half at South Weymouth with Dr. and Mrs. Daniel B. Nye, who are old friends of their father.

Both of the Tsai children have been doing well this past year, Helen especially so. Mrs. Russell of the Whittier School tells me that she is one of the finest girls that she has ever had under her care, and this seems to be the general verdict of those who meet Helen. She is alert and intelligent, friendly and jovial, and always eager to do her best and gratify her father’s ambitions for her. Mrs. Russell thinks she should have another year but I am not quite sure that this will be the best plan, as most of the girls there are younger than Helen and I am inclined to think that it would be better for her to get into a somewhat larger school and with girls more nearly her own age. Admiral Tsai has written me that he doesn’t care to have her go to college; so that I am considering several of the best finishing schools known to me, notably St. Margaret’s up on the Hudson between New York and Albany and the Walnut Hill School at Natick, Mass. Helen seems to prefer the latter, and largely on account of the location, for she will then be a little nearer her brother and me. I have arranged for her to put in the next two months at Camp Onaway at Newfound Lake, New Hampshire, a girl’s camp of excellent standing and highly recommended to me by some of my friends who are familiar with it and with those in charge. Helen left for the camp only this morning, and I hope to run up there myself within a few days and see that everything is all right.

Alfred makes rather slow progress in his studies and is not always responsive to advice and suggestion. I doubt whether he will be able to do our work, even in the lowest class, next year, though he will be tested out at the end of the summer, for it is possible that he will have been able to build up a stronger foundation by that time. He is here at present, but leaves for his camp tomorrow morning. The camp to which he is going is located on the other side of Newfound Lake; so that he will be only a few miles from his sister who will probably be able to see him occasionally. The camp is in charge of Mr. Sanborn, the Superintendent of our local schools in Andover, a man of good character and refinement, and I am truly glad to have Alfred under his care.

Mary Sun and her brothers Arthur and Charlies called on me a few days ago. The Tsai children had just arrived; so that we had the pleasure of giving them all a chance to meet one another at my home. Mary seems in much better spirits than earlier in the year and apparently has been doing better in her work. She plans to spend most of the summer at the Cornell Summer School, and I asked her when she was here to get in touch with you and find out whether you were going to be at Ithaca or not. I was very anxious that she should be in touch with you if you did plan to be there this summer. During the winter I accepted an invitation from Elmira College to speak to their girls there at one of their Sunday exercises, and I did so largely for the opportunity the visit gave me to see Mary and find out from her teachers how she was getting along. The reports, on the whole, were favorable, though I judge from what was told me that Mary was finding the sledding a bit hard at first but would doubtless increase her momentum as she went further along.

As you probably know, Arthur Sun, together with Quincey Sheh, is to return to China in a few weeks. The latter, by the way, has made a very brilliant record at Bowdoin College and was the only boy in this class to receive the highest honors in English at his graduation.

Tom Sun has just finished his freshman year at Middlebury College and his marks indicate that he has done much better in his work than any of us, I think, had anticipated would be the case. He has also handled his money with greater discretion than formerly; so that I am quite pleased at this year’s development in his case.

Charlie Sun has done splendidly at Amherst, got high marks in all his work, and shown those same qualities of common sense and dependability that have won my confidence from the start.

If you have any further suggestions in regard to any of these words of mine, I do hope you will be perfectly free to offer them. It is not always clear to me that I am doing the best that can be done for them, though it has ever been my aim to do just that, at least so far as my best judgment would permit.

With kindest personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>

Thank you for your letter of April 5 which came this morning.

Mary's telegram was forwarded to me in New York and was not received until Saturday morning. I wired her in your care authorizing the New York visit on the way to Elmira, provided you should approve of the plan. Evidently my message did not arrive in time, but since you appear to have been satisfied with the arrangement, I am glad that the plan went through.

I am especially glad that Mary could have been with you during the vacation and that you have also had a chance to get a bit better acquainted with Quincey Sheh. Quincey, in my judgment, is an exceptionally promising boy and has proved one of the most satisfactory and dependable of my numerous Chinese ward.

My dear Dr. Sze:

I have recently received from Mary Sun, as has her oldest brother Arthur, letters reporting great distress over the seeming failure to meet properly the scholarship requirements of the college and intimating vigorously that Mary was bringing pressure to bear on her father to permit her to give up college and return home. Frankly, I think she is suffering a good bit from the effects of a cold and the consequent run-down physical condition, coupled with natural homesickness. On the other hand, it has always been difficult for me to find out from Mary exactly how matters stood with her; so that I am a bit perplexed at present to know just what to say or do.

I am wondering whether from your Elmira connections and friends you could perhaps get some first-hand information about Mary and her status in the college which would prove helpful to me in advising her wisely. If this is asking too much, don’t hesitate to refuse the request. If, on the other hand, you have friends at Elmira who can and will give you a frank report on Mary’s status and prospects, I am sure that those reports would prove most helpful to us all.

With the best wishes to you and yours for the new year just opening, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Thank you for your prompt and more than satisfactory reply to my letter of recent date. I am making plans for the Suns to leave for Washington the day after Christmas and I hope that the oldest brother, now in Cambridge, and Quincey Sheh, who is due back from Bowdoin shortly, will join the party. Of course I can't speak for them finally until I have learned their decision.

My dear Dr. Sze

Thank you for your letter of June 7, which I find on my desk on my return from a hurried trip to New York.

I am asking the Principal of Sea Pines to send you the literature of the school that you may have a clear picture of the place and its life and work. Miss Bickford writes me by this morning's mail that Mary seems increasingly contented and happy; so that I am disposed to agree with you that the best arrangement I can make for Mary is to continue the Sea Pines connection through the summer, and I hope that Mary herself will feel that this is really the best thing to do.

I received only a few days ago Mr. Sun’s letter to which you refer. Apparently he is inclined to approve all of the steps we have taken thus far to provide for Mary’s 'further stay in America and her college course.

Trusting that you will have a most enjoyable and restful simmer, believe me

Very sincerely yours.</text>

                <text>June 5. 1936
Hon. Sao-Ke Alfred Sze
Chinese Legation Washington. D. C.

My dear Dr. Sze:

Again my thanks for your prompt reply to my recent communication.

Miss Bickford tells me that applications for the summer session at Sea Pines threaten to overcrowd them already and she is anxious to have me decide definitely within the next few days whether I wish to enter Mary for that session or not. Of course in sending Mary down there at this time I had in mind providing for the interim period between the closing of her last school and the opening of the Cornell session. At the same time, I recognized that, if the arrangement should prove satisfactory to all concerned. it might seem from all points of view wise to continue it through the summer. Naturally I should not have thought of this, had the original plan of having Mary live and tutor with a member of the Elmira faculty proved workable. Unless, therefore, you feel that there are reasons why Mary ought to go to Ithaca. I shall feel disposed to tell Miss Bickford that I am inclined to favor the Sea Pines arrangement for the summer and am ready to make a tentative application for Mary’s enrollment there, subject to cancellation in case to find that Mary is not going to be happy under this scheme.

When Miss Clemons met Mary in Boston Thursday and turned her over to Miss Bickford. Mary made many inquiries about the school. Then she found that it was on the shore, that there would be a large group of girls there for the summer, and that tennis courts and other facilities were provided for a wholesome and active life, she seemed quite enthusiastic over the plan, and said she liked the idea of it very much. If her hopes are realized, therefore, I am inclined to think that she will take kindly to the suggestion of making that her summer home, and I am very sure that she could not be under better influences.

A note from the Registrar of Elmira College received yesterday tells me so that the college will allow Mary 14 1/2 credits towards her admission on the basis of the work she has already covered to date and suggests that an additional half point in Algebra be worked off during the summer. While this becomes the technical requirement for admission, I feel sure that Mary should do some further work in English and perhaps French in order that she may not find the demands of the college curriculum too severe when she actually enters upon her work at Elmira.

I am sorry that Mr.Robinson has delayed his visit until so late in the year. Tom Sun tells me that he had word from his mother that Mr. Robinson will not reach Andover until July. If that is the case, I may find it a bit difficult to make a personal contact with him, though as my daughter will probably sail for Europe about the last of July, I shall be in this part of the world, at least, at that time.

With renewed assurances of esteem and appreciation of your more than friendly help, believe me

Very sincerely yours.
