Dear Sir: In the absence of Principal Stearns permit us to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the sixth. I note that you plan to enter Cornell this Fall and ask for a certificate covering the work you have passed here. If you will look up in the Cornell catalogue the conditions for admission on certificate you will find that only graduates of approved schools are given that privilege. Since you have not yet graduated here, I suppose it will, therefore, be impossible for us to fill out for you a regular Cornell certificate covering the work you have done. No doubt Mr. Stearns will be entirely willing to give you a letter of honorable dismissal, but I fear he could not sign the form which you sent, because you have said, “No”, to the question which asks if you have “taken an entrance examination held by a college or by the C.E.E. Board”. Probably you did not notice that the question refers to any college examinations.
