My dear Mr.Macfarland,

I do not quite know how to account for the reports which Mr.Ungvary has sent you of his situation. The boy is in some ways peculiar. So far as reports have reached me, he has always been faithful and earnest in his work and has done well in his various subjects. Along that line he seems well worth helping. In some either ways, however, he has been harder to understand.

Some of our poorest boys here are accustomed to put up with pretty rugged accommodations. Ungvary from the start objected to such surroundings on the ground that his health required something better. This may be perfectly true and I don’t want to be unfair to him. At the same time on several occasions I have thought I noticed a little tendency to spend a little more money and secure something a little better than a good many of our working boys required. Doubtless the boy’s health and temperament may make this necessary.

Please don’t misunderstand me for, barring the traits referred to, the boy seems in every way most worthy. But I would regret deeply to have him develop a lack of appreciation of what is being done for him and a willingness to accept freely all charities offered without doing his part to make ends meet. Early in the term I secured him an excellent opportunity to earn a most desirable room. He threw up the job within a few days on the ground that the ladies in charge of the house were too fussy and exacting. I know they were particularly but I know that every year boys have rejoiced to get the particular opportunity afforded in this house and that the moment Ungvary gave up the position, another good fellow stepped immediately and enthusiastically into the breach. This is one of the things that has made me a little nervous about the boy. In a word, it does not seem to me that he has yet done his best to help himself. If he has been laid off at the dining hall, it is because he was less efficient than the others. I hope, however, that this lay off may be only temporary.

Assuring you of my deep appreciation of your many kindnesses to this boy and trusting that what I have written may aid you in passing judgement on his case, believe me,

Very sincerely yours,

Alfred E. Stearns.

My dear Mr.Macfarland,

I have your favor of the 9th inst. relating to Messr. Ungvary and Anderson. I have encouraged Mr.Ungvary to carry out his plan to enter Phillps this fall. I understand that he would do so. I think he understands the conditions pretty thoroughly and ought to be able meet them. There is no question though but that he should not attempt the work unless he has some funds on which to draw at the outset. There are bound to be expenses when a boy begins his life here, and without some resources boys are sure to be swamped before they can become familiar enough with conditions to XX enough to meet the demands made upon their pocket books. Can you tell me how much Mr.Ungvary can count on at the start. If he proves able to meet our scholarship standards he will be given scholarship aid. I think too that I can provide him an opportunity to work his board if he proves efficient in that sort of work. On the inclosed scholarship application blank you will find a statement of the condition under which scholarships are granted, and you can doubtless tell from the date given there how likely your friend will be to meet the requirements. In one or two exceptional cases each year the first payment of $50 is waived. Naturally these exceptions are made in favor of the most promising and needy boys. I shall be glad to have your opinion as to the desirability of considering Mr. Ungvary on this basis.

Awaitting your further reply, and with kind personal regards, believe me.

Very truly yours.

Dear Sir:-

I have your letter of the 18th inst. I am very much interested in your Hungarian friend. We have a good many nationalities presented here already. One of the most interesting and promising boys we have is a young Italian who under circumstances very similar to those existing in the present instance was sent here by Dr Huntington of New York. This boy, too, is preparing for the ministry, and we believe that he will make good.

I mention these cases simply that you may understand that while we are accustomed to hold pretty rigidly to our regular courses, we are at the same time willing to make necessary allowances and exceptions for foreigners. Consequently I think we can do as much for your friend. From the catalogue which I am sending you under separate cover you will be able to see what our general courses are. As most of our boys go to Yale, these courses are arranged to meet in full the Yale requirements. I see no reason why such a course cannot be satisfactorily arranged
I do not understand from your letter whether it is your wish to have the boy enter here this year, or whether you wish him to wait until the opening of the next school year. If you will advise me on this point I shall be glad to offer were satisfactory suggestions You will be able to tell from the catalogue the amount of ground covered by our classes term by term as well as during the entire year. May I also suggest that you have your friend fill out carefully and return to me the application blank which will be found in the back of the catalogue The information called for on this blank will make it possible for me to handle the case more intelligently. Please feel free also to advise me if you desire further or more detailed information.

Very truly yours,
Principal.</text>

I thank you for your letter.

As this matter needs to be settled at once in order that Mr. Ungvary, in case of entering Andover, may begin with the January term, I am advising him to go to Andover at once to confer with you.

He is however at work until January 1st., and Christmas Day would be the only opportunity to do so.

I wonder if you could give him a little time next Tuesday.

If so, could leave here Tuesday at 9-10 in the morning getting to Boston at two o’clock. I presume he would get out to Andover about four o’clock.

If you could see him on Tuesday will you be so kind as to telegraph me at once.

If it is impossible for you to see him on Tuesday, will you please write me and make an appointment for some other day next week.

He will come at some other time if necessary but he prefers not to lose a day at his work.

The enclosed blank is the one he has filled out. There are
however so many matters to be considered that I hardly see how we can do it by correspondence. Moreover as you will see,he has very little time to decide as to where he may enter in January

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Stearns:-

Since receiving your letter of February 3rd, I have seen Ungvary. This was, after your conversation with Mr. Ungvary. I think the fellow’s spirit is all right. might be necessary, however, to have some patience with him until he gets adjusted.

It is evident that his work in the dining hall seriously affected him. In addition I judge some of the men upon whom he waited may have been supercilious,

The main difficulty, however, is that this work takes away his own appetite. I can sympathize with him, somewhat. I worked very hard during my course of education, but I seriously doubt whether I could have stood that kind of work.

However, I told him that he would have to put the thing through and do what he could. I think if he is given time and encouragement, he will be able to pull through.

I thank you for giving so much time and interest to the matter.

Sincerely yours,

Dictated.

                <text>Aug. 9th I907
Principal Alfred L. Stearns,
Andover, Mass.
Dear Mr. Stearns,

You will recall that upon my introduction John J. Ungvary had some conference with you regarding the matter of entering Andover.

Immediately after seeing you he went to Mount Hermon and remained there until about the first of May. He was then obliged to leave because his funds gave out and he was unable to obtain any work there to help him along.

He has been serving for a little while as private secretary to the President of Lehigh University. He is now doing some commercial work in Philadelphia.

He is desirous, however, of taking up his plans again in September and of entering Andover at that time if possible.
He seems to be in doubt as to what he can count upon if he goes to Andover.

He tells me that he understood from you that he would get a scholarship and that there would be a chance for him to work for his board.

What he now desires is to know definitely what he might be able to do.

My impression is that he is a very good secretary and stenographer. He has a large fund of general intelligence which is a good deal beyond his academic acquirements.

As I understand it his feeling is that he would like to come to Andover if there was a fair chance of getting along without running seriously into debt.

I am desirous that he should put this matter through if it can be done. He has placed himself in my hands and I should be greatly obliged if you would write me what you could definitely assure in the matter, I presume you are also in communication with Charles A. Anderson, who is also now at Lt. Hermon. He is a remarkably promising fellow.

So far as such men are concerned, Mt .Hermon does not seem to be adequate. They have so many applicants there that apparently they let men come and go without taking any personal interest in them, I think that if they had grasped Mr. Ungvary’s situation it might have been arranged so that he might have remained there through the summer semester. Some funds which had been promised him did not materialize. They let him go without attempting to tide him over at all.

I shall greatly appreciate it if you will let me know just what could be done for Mr. Ungvary in September.

I think he will have just about money enough to get into Andover. Later on, if necessary, he could probably borrow. I think, however, it would be necessary to find some work for him at the start. My impression is that if you could find some secretarial work for him he would be equal to it.
Dictated
Sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Stearns;

I have in hand a very promising young man, whose education and preparation for the ministry, I am called upon to direct.

His case is an interesting one. He is a Hungarian and the son of a saloon-keeper. He is now twenty three years of age, and occupies a responsible position as private secretary to one of the directors of The Yale and Towne Lock Co., of Stamford. He is an experienced stenographer.

His education has pursued a somewhat erratic course. He left school before reaching High School. He has however, since that time, qualified himself in large measure by his own study. He attended a Business School for a while. He also put in a hard year at the preparatory school at Heidelberg University in Ohio.

He took one full year of Latin and one half a year of Greek. In English and history I judge he stands fairly well. The main point on which he would fall short is mathematics.

In addition to his work at the preparatory school he has also been tutored somewhat. His plan is to prepare to enter Yale. He wishes ultimately to enter the ministry in order to do work among the Hungarian people. He is a good speaker and a man of strong personality.

The matter I now have in hand is to get him prepared to enter Yale. He would need to pursue a somewhat irregular course. It seems to me he ought to be able to get ready for Yale in about two years, if he could do his work in special ways.

I wish that he might go to Andover Academy, but I do not know to what extent you can care for such special students. Perhaps it may be necessary for him to go to some other school, like Northfield, for his first year, and then take a second year at Andover.

He has resigned his business position and is ready to begin the first of January. He has about three hundred dollars in cash.

I think that his is a case well worthy of attention.

May I submit the matter to you and receive your early reply as to what you could do for him and also an estimate of the expense per year. If so I shall be very grateful.

Sincerely yours,

Feb. 4th, 1908.

Prin. Alfred E. Stearns,
Phillips Academy,
Andover, Mass.

Dear Mr. Stearns:-

I thank you for your letter. It confirms my own feeling. It is evident that Ungvary will need to adjust himself to the situation and be willing to pay the price for the prize he is seeking.

At the same time I sympathize with him. I went through his experience myself. I know what it means to give up a life of relative affluence for one of poverty.

Mr. Ungvary had a salary of about $1200.00 a year, all of which he spent in taking care of himself.

As you know I sent him to Mount Hermon. The drudgery there became too much for him. In a moment of despair he left and went to Philadelphia and resumed a business occupation, intending to get together some money and then go back. He soon saw, however, that he had not the time to pursue that course and so he came to me again.

I thought that perhaps if I sent him to Andover the better spirit of things there would sustain him. He is much more enthusiastic over Andover, than he was at Mt. Hermon. Nevertheless he is at the same time under the disadvantage of being associated with boys, who have money to spend.
I do not think he means to make himself an object of charity. His idea is to borrow money, which he no doubt will be able to pay.

[no signature – letterhead of Rev. Charles S. MacFarland, Ph.D.]

He does not sufficiently [sic] realize that if he take-up the ministry, he is entirely unlikely to be able to pay it back.

I have said nothing to him about this matter. I have written him that at the present moment I am unable to obtain further loans, owing to the pressure at the present time resting on me. The fact is that I have too many cases of this kind on my hands. I wrote him, however, to hold on and that I believed we could pull the matter through.

He told me when here that the work in the dining hall, sometimes became almost unbearable. That it absolutely took away his own appetite and unfitted him for his work.

At that time he had in mind some schemes, which he hoped to develope [sic] for making some money in a different way.

I wonder if his aquipment [sic]and ability might not be used in some better way than waiting in the dining hall. As I understand it he is a good stenographer. I had thought that possibly he might get some work of that kind to do. He also hoped to increase his tutoring.

It is a very hard matter concerning which to write him a letter that he would not misunderstand, If I could see him I might be able to straighten him out.

May I suggest that you have a frank talk with him. I know that you can do it in just the right way and I would recommend that you have such a talk with him and have the matter out with him. I think perhaps if you can get him to the point of setting his teeth, he has grit enough to carry the thing through. I suggest this because a personal talk with him will do more than anything, which I can write him.

Later on if the financial situation should get better I might be able to get hold of some man to stand behind him. As it is my constituency here is involved very deeply in the financial situation and I do not dare to press upon my men other than the most urgent cases of this kind.

I thank you for your thoughtful attention to this matter. Sincerely yours,

Dictated.</text>

Principal Alfred E. Stearns,
Andover, Mass.

My Dear Mr. Stearns:

I thank you for your letter in relation to Mr. Ungvary.

I will state his case as I understand it.

I. At the time when he came to me he had a position as private secretary and stenographer at twelve hundred dollars a year with good prospects.

II. His previous education has been good in a general way, but was not of the best to fit him for academic work. While he probably has a better education than most academy graduates, it is somewhat wanting so far as the regular curriculum is concerned.

III. Mount Hermon reported to me that he was doing well there. He had to leave earlier than he intended because some funds which were promised him did not materialize.

IV. I do not think that he has any funds to speak of at the present moment. Possibly he can borrow a little something to start with.

V. I think there is some doubt as to whether he will be able to meet your scholarship standards at once. He will probably be long on some things and short on others. My impression is that
you will have to consider the term "Scholastic Standards” in a latitudinarian way.

VI. He will be willing to work for his board in any way necessary and possible.
37 BAYVIEW AVENUE
SOUTH NORWALK, CONNECTICUT

2.

VII. I should advise waiving his payment of fifty dollars in his case.

VIII. So far as working his way is concerned, I wish he could get some sort of secretarial work. He is equipped in this respect and could probably do work of that kind with readiness so that it might not interfere with his studies.

To sum up the matter in general; I should say that it was worth while to give him a special opportunity. I think it would be necessary to make a good many concessions in his case. My feeling is that he is sufficiently promising to warrant doing so If he can be gotten along through the Academy, there is no doubt that he can he taken care of at Yale.

I have written him and advised him to get into communication with you again.
Owing to the fact that he had to leave Mt. Hermon suddenly because of some indefinite promises, he feels that before	going to Andover he ought to know just what he can count on.

I do not think Mount Hermon is the place for such fellows,	anyway. I hope he can make it at Andover.

Sincerely yours,

Prof. Alfred E. Stearns, Andover, Mass.

My dear Mr. Stearns:

Sometime ago Mr. John J. Ungvary, wrote me that he was in financial need and I thought I had a plan which would help him out.

The source upon which I counted, however, failed to materialize. I now have a letter from him this morning stating that he is without a cent, that he has been laid off from the dining hall and that he must have immediate assistance.

I have several cases like his on my hands, some of which are more urgent than his.

Therefore it may take me a little time to get hold of some one to help him.

I have learned nothing regarding his work at Andover, excepting what I have gathered from him.

I wish you would write me as to whether or not he impresses you as giving sufficient promise to warrant me in obtaining help for him.

I do not know whether or not he has told you of his situation. I judge it is very urgent and I am trying to find some one who will get interested in him.

Will you please let me know what you think of him?
